Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force spotted a PLA Navy flotilla consisting of the Shandong, a Type 055 large destroyer, a Type 052D destroyer, two Type 054A frigates, a Type 901 comprehensive replenishment ship and a Type 903 comprehensive replenishment ship when they sailed in Pacific waters from April 10 to Sunday, Japan's Ministry of Defense Joint Staff said in a press release on Monday.

In this period, the Shandong hosted about 140 fighter jet sorties and about 70 helicopter sorties, meaning that the carrier hosted about 210 aircraft sorties in a week, according to the press release.

Japan has been reporting the Shandong aircraft carrier group's movement since April 7 when it first entered the West Pacific from the Bashi Channel. In the 10 days from April 7 to Sunday, the PLA Navy carrier hosted about 330 aircraft sorties, the Japanese Defense Ministry said.

This figure means that the Shandong's drills are more intensive than those previously carried out by the Liaoning, observers said.

Does anyone else also thinks the carrier is a bit less defended than ideal IF we were expecting real combat? A US CSG in combat zone would usually compose of at least 3 aegis ships for AAW. While 054A is a good addition for their ASW capability and able to serve as picket ships in AAW it still doesn't have the raw anti-air power of a 052D or 055.

Of course all above is hypothetical as they might be keeping the size of escort down to not escalate the tension too much not unlike US CSG rarely have its escort in full strength while they are in this part of the world either.

First confrontation of two opposing CSGs in 80 years.

Not quite

Royal Navy Carriers faced off with the Argentinian Carrier during the Falklands war in 1982

the Argentinians spotted the Royal Navy fleet, and the A-4 Skyhawks prepared to take off as the Carrier turned into the wind

and due to what is a very rare event in the South Atlantic the winds died and the Skyhawks never took off

Would have been better to buy a new hull from China...maybe faster too.
The Kuznetskov is a complete mess and has been for it's entire existence. The real problem isn't even the ship, it's because Russia doesn't have any ports that can handle the maintenance on the ship. So even if they buy a new carrier from China it would only last a few years before falling into disrepair. Unless they commission the maintenance from China. But at that point, they could also just send the Kuznetskov to China to begin with.
