CV-16, CV-17 STOBAR carrier thread (001/Liaoning, 002/Shandong)

Is it normal for a aircraft carrier to be in and out of the drydock so often. We have seen over the years I don't know how many times that the Liaoning or the Shangdong is in a drydock. Certainly more often than the Admiral Kuznetsov.

This is only the second scheduled major refit, the first major refit was in 2018, major work involved resurfacing of top deck and scrapping barnacle built-up and repainting of the bottom Hull and others.

A few other previous visits to dry docks were for quick maintenance that last for just a few weeks. These are minor maintenance works.

Current visit to dry dock is the second major refit for CV16 that will last for around 6 months. The first major refit with similar maintenance works was done in 2018.

Update on Shandong CSG:


According to the Japanese, between 7th to 9th there were 40 helicopter sorties and 80 fix wing sorties from the carrier. Curiously the Japanese didn't see any 055 in the CSG but according to ETC's own photo published today a 055 did join the CSG:

Shandong and Nimitz CSG movements over the last few days:

It sure looks like Shandong CSG was acting out playing as shield on east side of Taiwan in event of AR.

Shield and eyes. Her own complement of J15s might not scare a Nimitz, but her escorts makes her a very hard nut to crack herself, and she doesn’t need much direct offensive capabilities when she can call in land based DF26s if the Nimitz gets close enough to be detected. Even launching standoff attacks against the Shandong would massively narrow down the area China’s space based ISR needs to focus on.

Kuznetsov has been undergoing overhaul/refit since early 2017, with projected end of overhaul in 2024. Liaoning's overhaul will likely be measured in months, not years.

The Kuznetsov is in a lot worse shape. When you delay maintenance for a long time and use equipment improperly that is what tends to happen.

The situation with the boilers is one example. The sailors used sea water in the boilers in the 1990s instead of distilled water and it corroded them.

80 fixed-wing takeoffs and landings in 3 days seems to be a new record. I hope that the continuous dispatch rate can reach about 40 sorties per day, the level of the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier

It depends on the kind of mission they are flying and the number of aircraft they are carrying but by raw numbers, it isn't actually. I made a chart of the known sortie rates CV-16 and 17 CVWs had flown as counted by JMSDF. According to them, at least, Liaoning's air group had already flown 40 sorties each of J-15 and helo on the 23rd, 26th, and 27th respectively.

From February 17th to 22nd, there were a total of 180 takeoffs and landings, and from February 17th to 27nd, there were a total of 260 takeoffs and landings. So on the 23rd, 26th, and 27th, there were a total of 80 takeoffs and landings, not 80 per day.。

Oh okay. Thanks. I was wondering about my math too for a sec. I misread 17th~27th as 22th~27th smh. Yeah this 3 day 80 sortie indeed is a new record.
