I'm sorry, there is actually a way to increase array size even if the cross sectional area is reduced.

Quickie, here is the way using an analogy.

You get a sausage. Slice the sausage in the vertical. Now you get a sliced area that is round. That will be your array face.

Want to increase the array area with a limited diameter? Now try slicing starting from the middle, the cutting it forward to create a slanted cut. Or just to make it simple, cut it in a canted way.

Now if you look at the cut area, its bigger, though the shape is oval and the face is canted.

The drawbacks is that the canted array face cannot be moved. Its fixed. So it requires a PESA or an AESA to do any form of scanning.

So its possible with such a nose that you can retain the same array area, with a slight length increase, though I'm not that happy with the sacrifices in the lack of mechanical flexibility.

Going along with radars... Does anybody have any sources or knowledge what kind of radar the J-10B (if not PS) will be using? On chinese military aviation (cnair.com) it says it's a PESA. If it is, does anyone know if it's indigenous?

Crobato,

I suppose that would enhanced capability in one direction only, for example, the look-down direction.

The other problem that need to be taken care of would be the distribution of weight because of the smaller nose section.

Its likely to be indigenous. China has its own radar industry now and hasn't bought any radar from foreign sources, for quite some time now. There is no discussion with the Russians regarding any radar purchase. The last ones were even scuttled years ago.

If its PESA, that's already within the realm of possibility within China's radar manufacturers.

There are two new pictures of the J-10B prototype in the china-defense-mashup site, updated today.

This time i have no more doubts about the credibility of the photos of the J-10B

So, if J-10B really has a PESA radar, in what class of fighter this new variation of the J-10 will be standing now?

It is really hard to say, but i would like to point out 2 things:

in the first one the aircraft has the number 01 at the intake level but the second one is plain yellow.
secondlt the first pic shows a slanted nose pin whereas the second one shows a straight one???????

I was really hoping they'd feature AESA and and an indigenous engine with at least 2D TVC on this model. Maybe even supercruise capability, albeit that may be a tad too much to ask for. Further RCS reduction features may also be a little too much to expect at this stage. However, it'd be nice to see a J-10 variant approach the performance of the EF-2000 in the near future :D

The new nose of the plane seems not as straight forward as it is on the A model, but a little rounded.
With that contour, somewhat resembling the shape of an airfoil, I think maybe the fuselage itself produces a bit additional lift now. If efficiency is increased that way, the wing loading may be decreased.
I guess to reach supercruise capability, it's engine must still become even more powerfull.

In the right pic in post #152, the edge of the nose / radom looks indeed a little canted, I can't recognize that in the other pictures, however.

Yah I doubt these are fake anymore, but theres no real way to confirm what sort of radar it carries or what sort of material it is made from for some year most likely but what improvements we can tell my looking are quite startling.

I start to give more credibility on this J-10B. However, not 100% yet. As I said previously, we need more photos.

There is still one point I doubt about: If you compare the last two photos, you'll see that one of it has slope painting, while the other has a straight painting.
