New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

Here is a Chinese blogger's first-hand experience with indigenous NEV. The OP lives in Shanghai.

After factoring in the government incentives and rebates, he paid about 27.6k yuans for his car of MRSP of 300k on the last day of 2022. He did not reveal the branch and model of his car. Thought he said it is 5m long, 2m wide, 3m between axles, a C class vehicle in China's vehicle classifications, same as BMW x5 series which would have cost him 400k to 500k.

In a month, he added 1650km to the milage. He has his own recharge station built in garage. The bill for the same period of time shows that his car used 278 kWh in off-peak hours and 79 kWh in peak hours. The total cost is 141 yuans. That's 8.5 yuans per 100km. If he was still driving his previous car, a Mercedes GLC260, it would have cost him 1643 yuans for gas.

He speaks highly of how fast the car accelerates and how quiet the car is on road. In his opinion, on overall features, specifications and performance, indigenous NEVs, even at lower prices, have beaten and surpassed the imported ICE vehicles, including the European high end brands like BBA (BMW, Mercedes Benz and Audi).

Days of high profit margin merely because of brand names have gone for the imported cars, he concludes.

A few days earlier, he was cut off by another car on expressway. He was able to slow down and barely let that car in without scratch. His car automatically captured a video when he slammed down the brake. Had there been accident, the video would be crucial. That's a cool feature.

You mentioned 3 inherent advantages of EVs over ICE cars.

(1) As total public utility is gradually moving toward renewable electricity, ICE fuel cost and emission are becoming more acute.

(2) Electric motors have inherent advantage in torque on demand over ICE power train.

(3) EV is borne to be beneficiary of ICT convergence and AI applications.

China's strong position in EV eco-system not only rides on battery supply-chain, but also enjoy the benefits of whole-nation information revolution. As an ICT professional in the past 3 decades, I even cannot believe how lucky China has been in this EV transition. There is no other country, not even US, can wrestle away China's pole position in EV anytime soon.

On the other side of the coin, I wait and see how US/Japan/Germany are going to deal with China when their auto industry as whole is falling further behind China. The more successful China gets in EV, the more frictions China will get from those countries.

check the comments on Denza production for sales chief
Business MPV is a unique segment in China auto market, not seen in US or EU. About 12 years ago when I visited my family, one of my best high school friends was driving an "MPV" to pick me up. I said something to me that almost made him ditch me as a close friend. I said to him: dude, I am glad you bought a 面包车(minivan in Chinese). And he instantly rebutted and argued why his car was an MPV not a minivan (面包车).

before this, all deliveries were DM-i version

And this is great for BYD. All the commercial vehicles in China are going to become electrified by 2025. Given BYD's full lineup, they should be able to compete everywhere.

Good analysis on the number of vehicles to be replaced and how well BYD is positioned to win these public bids.
