New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

Electric Viking's take on YangWang
not exactly complete, but catches the major point. BYD is sending a message here with this new brand and electric vehicles are just inherently safer and more capable than their ICE counterparts.

Tesla is down pre-market. On the same day BYD launches Yangwang, Tesla cuts prices. Shows the brand direction. Now that Tesla has lost its brand luster in China, it's going to be tough for them.

Another news is that there are more automakers that are using BYD's DM technology. Given how efficient it is, this could be another area of expansion for BYD.
Any ideas on what range we're looking at for the BYD PHEVs? Iirc RAV4 hybrid can do about 1000km before refueling.

The mass market model 2 will be released in 2024. But looking at the whole EV market situation, Japanese brands will be crushed over the next couple of years. High quality affordable Chinese EVs and cheap tesla will basically dominate over Japanese vaporware.

At this point, there isn't even vapourware from the Japanese automakers.
There's literally nothing to announce as they haven't even started development.

Cheaper tesla will mean lower profit margins, and therefore much lower prices for elon musk's tesla stock prices.

Well, it looks like Tesla gross margin in China is halving from the record 25-30% levels currently.
But if Tesla can maintain current profits if they double sales.

And if they do get to 20 million vehicles per year as targeted, then they do have to become a mass-market car company.
Sure, each vehicle makes less profit, but they make up for this with much larger volumes

At this point, we can legitimately call Tesla a Chinese company anyway. The defacto head of Tesla Automative Global is Chinese and more than half of Tesla production is from China. Plus we'll likely see China account for more than 50% of Tesla sales given the price cuts, which is up somewhat from the current 40% figure.

Tesla's embrace of China has significantly accelerated the development and adoption of clean energy vehicles globally, which will reduce the risk of catastrophic climate change events and also made Elon Musk one of the richest people alive.

It's an example of win-win for China and the US

btw, Bridget Mccarthy has a great thread on this
it did a much better job explaining things than I did

the focus on safety and the ability for electric control to make U8 safe cannot be understated. This is a major sales pitch and different maker for YangWang series over Benz and others. The new wheel base and e4 platform can do things that other luxury cars simply can't.

I really missed the part of U8 being a luxury car.
It explains the weird (to me) looks like the baby of a Rolls Royce and Land Rover Defender

I think consolidation is more likely. There are too many auto companies in China. They need to be consolidated. BTW, Xiaomi, like Huawei, is also diversifying into the NEV industry.

How competitive is China's NEV industry? This tweet implies that Tesla EVs made in China is at least 40% cheaper than those made in the U.S.

I inadvertently deleted the pictures of U8 yesterday. I'm re-posting these here again.
