No one is against automation. No one is saying "China shouldn't automate, and instead should continue to do low value added manual labor for the sake of preserving inefficiency and spiting technology." The population issue is entirely separate from the automation question. The population issue is because China requires a large domestic market to be truly independent. China's sales to foreign countries can always be tariffed or banned, and China in the future cannot rely solely on exporting to the foreign market. It's great advantage and why it has a stronger economy than others like Japan that are more automated per capita, is its large population. The future belongs to countries that have both a large population (and thus consumer base, tax base, and talent pool) and a highly automated manufacturing economy.

Then stop whining and post solutions, tidalwave. How can China have as many people as you have alts?

The west has an obsession with bloodlines and racial purity, hence the persistent western anxiety over declining white births and being swamped by coloureds. Naturally they transfer this insecurity onto china, they really should be paying china for therapy

How about some sincere contrition on the part of the CCP for the sick, evil and anti-human one child policy, a recognition of the civilizational level problem that low TFR causes, and a policy of ensuring as far as possible that every male worker earns enough to support a wife (who need not work) and several children? That policy worked for millennia. Anti-feminist? So sue me!

Not happening. Try again.
a recognition of the civilizational level problem that low TFR causes
Done.

See, China's no longer an agrarian society, that's just not happening.
Anti-feminist? So sue me!
Actual solutions, not MGTOW fantasies.

And yours?
Oh, I've written several. If only people here actually bothered to read rather than just grandstand on their soapboxes...

In any case, I'll summarize my beliefs about this issue. There are broadly two major disincentive structures that the government should tackle - one is economic and the other cultural. The economic one has begun to be addressed with the "common prosperity" platform and the deflation of the housing bubble. That's an excellent first step, but a lot more will be needed. Broadly speaking, I think the government should implement a program of "affirmative action for the two child family." Essentially, various ways of transferring wealth and opportunities to the preferred group at the expense of not-preferred groups.

The cultural one is more complex and difficult to measure, but I think that the Chinese government should exploit its unique level of influence over Chinese society to suppress anti-natal trends in popular culture, traditional media, social media, etc. and boost pro-natal ones. For example, instead of flaunting wealth, it would be much better for celebrities (and much better for their relationship with the government) to flaunt their kids. Over time, the cultural shift will percolate throughout society.

Instead of ridiculous ideas intended to force people like banning contraceptives (which will only engender public anger and ridicule), a much more effective way would be to manipulate them into wanting children and easing the economic burden of having them.

The soapbox from which I grandstand includes 2 young boys and a prospective 3rd. Yours?

I agree there should be some sort of grant programme for having kids.

Culturally the real change that is needed is to have women value motherhood as much or more than they value 'career' success. I have known so many highly intelligent, attractive ladies who end up single and childless because they are pursuing partnership or whatever and in the end it is entirely meaningless.
