Please see my satirical post a few post back. I reproduce below. The medal table is always on the number of gold won. Not total medals.

The most surprising is probably table tennis match. I didn't catch it as I was pretty down still the gymnastic result.
Yup. Women's 55kg. China athlete was conservative for some reason (3kg below her WR) and lost by 1kg to Filipino
I think we should count this as another gold for China. Hong Kong's Cheng win gold today. And the great thing about this is when they raise the Hong Kong flag, the national anthem is the Chinese one! But the best of all, he has the same given name as that other traitor badminton player! Lol
The most annoying thing is to hear the talking heads say stuff like "Oh they only win medals in stupid events like women's target shooting".
For countries that pride themselves on gender equity and empowerment, pretty brain dead stuff to say.
I would say they do say it less now, but in 2008, it was rampant. China is "padding" their medal count, as if somehow they made up these sports.
All time worst was the implication that Yao Ming was basically some lab project (a whole book was published!), and all Chinese Olympians are basically sent to Uighur-camp for athletes.
I wish Yao Ming was a lab project, because the Chinese basketball team has sucked since. Kind of shows he really is/was a Hall of Fame talent.

I'm sure this gold will be much appreciated by the HK people after more than a year of destructive rioting. I don't remember, has HK ever won a gold before?
Anyway, we should remember that the Olympics are about the athletes and the sport, not national pride. For the longest time, we put our national pride on the Olympics because we were struggling to catch up to the developed nations. However, in 2008, we proved that the Chinese people can be the best at the Olympics, and that's all the proof we need.
It's time to stop obsession over every medal and just enjoy the Olympics and support the athletes.
