Hong-Kong Protests

BNO not accepted by China as valid passport from January 31.
Sorry if it inconvenience some of us, but this is overall a good development and about time. Why would China recognize a travel document issued by a foreign government on behalf of Chinese Citizen in Chinese territory?

You are either Chinese or a foreigner. Simple as that. Non-Chinese Citizen should have no say on how Chinese territory is governed.

loyalty is a virtue, betting on two sides is a sin. Trump"s grand father was deported by Germany for hiding his immigration status.

HM Govt is saying it anticipates about 300,000 will take up the offer over the next 5 years. I suspect only a very small fraction of that will do so. Given the Covid infection levels, the endless seeming lockdown and what will undoubtedly be one of the most vicious recessions in history to follow, I think very few will make UK any sort of destination of choice.

【#正言焦點】外交部:1月31日起中方不再承認所謂的BNO護照作為旅行證件和身份證明

Here it is colks. In full text. From 31st Jan Chinese government no longer accept BNO even as a travel document due to significant changes to the UK's position. I particularly loved the way it added in bracket (to become 2nd class citizens).

How many you suspect will come is not the point, my Sampan friend.

The British Government are playing 'Realpolitik' as Kissinger once said.

Because in their public announcements they keep mentioning over 2 millions are eligible. So that's for show. So this makes them look good in the eyes of the world, and their own domestic audiences, because it shows Britain cares more about 'democracy and freedom'.

Because if they were genuiningly believed that these people were British nationals, then they should have gave them all full Britush passport from the 1st July 1997 or sooner. Even under the colonial days, we, the Hong Kongers were never recognised as a full British national. So all the sudden British has grown a conscience?

In reality they, like you, suspect not more than 300,000 will want to take up this 'generous' offer of second class citizenship. Because you know as well as I do living in the U.K. the xenophobic sides of the Tory party plus all the other nationalist party ain't going to wear it. Look at what happened last time when less than 28,000 Indians arrived at the door step. Any large influx of immigration, and you will have the 'rivers of blood' on your hands.

And let's see the other side of the coin. Which no one seem to have picked up on. The British Government keep mentioning with their new found conscience how generous they are by offering up to 2 million Hong Kongers a chance of a better life, under freedom and democracy, and away from tyranny and authoritarianism.

Yet conviently brush aside that this generous and tempting offer, only leads to SMALL take up! And for every take up, the BBC, British government mouthpiece, will go a full article on it.

But what's happened to all those people desperate to escape a lifetime of 1984 style tyranny and misery? Why didn't take up the offer? Is it because it's not the shiny beacon of light they portrait it to be? Don't hold your breath waiting for the 'impartial' BBC to do an article on that anytime.

According to CNN article below, UK is opening its border for Hong Kong people who is fleeing the National Security Law. If these people think they are not Chinese or they don't feel safe living in Hong Kong, let them go!

No, you do not want a mass exodus Hong Kongers to the UK. It’s called a brain drain, and they take with them all of their money, which will only help the UK economy. UK is certainly not doing this for humanitarian reasons.

Before the 1997 handover, many HKers also immigrated to Canada, Australia. How many millions of dollars did they take with them.

Most people leaving are just hoodlums who have no benefit to the country as citizens. Those who are actually educated, who have money, who can actually be considered brain drain if they left are generally not that stupid; they know that they stand to be more successful in China as a patriot than anywhere else in the world. And for those who were, they wouldn't benefit China anyway; they would just be taking an insider seat to leeching off of the Chinese economy while serving Western interests to create dissent in China. Clearing Hong Kong of trash so that the population is more patriotic is well worth anything that might be lost.

Not what happened during 1997 though. The rich and educated took all their money and left for Canada. Many got their Canadian green cards though investment visas. The same reasons why they left then are the same reasons why some still want to leave today.

UK wants people and money to leave Hong Kong. After brexit they need all the human capital they can get.

This is not 1997. China was very far behind in 1997 and you could be very smart and educated but have nowhere to use your talents in China. Today, if you are a talented Chinese, there is nowhere in the world where you could develop better than in China. This is the reality for the rich and educated Chinese today; for different than in 1997. The people who we don't want to leave are those who are talented and would love to contribute to China but would go elsewhere for an easier life/better opportunities. These are not them. Once again, these people hate China and want to be somewhere else; they won't be contributors to China anyway. They'll just be leeches in China serving Western interests.

Let them go. Forcing them to stay is like holding in a dump just to deprive the grass of fertilizer. China has more than enough people and would be much better off if all the hanjian left and we could house patriots in the space they occupied. The UK can take them and be uncomfortable. They don't really want Asians, especially not those who just complain all day, and the Hong Kongers who make it there can feel first hand what it's like to be discriminated against by the ones they held on a pedestal. It's an educational opportunity that there's no place like home. Then those who live in the UK will have children educated there facing the discrimination while growing up. Some of them may blossom and be inspired by the power of their home country to become proud sea turtles to finally pay for their parent's errors. People who stay home all day just find things to complain about; the most patriotic Chinese are those who have been overseas and know that Chinese power is the only answer to Western racism and exceptionalism.

Practicality it still doesn't change anything though, more like a gesture, similar with how they western institutions trying to sanctions china/hk that in reality it has no merit whatsoever. BNO is only used when these people arrive in UK, while arriving at HK they will use the HK passport. It falls short of changing anything if that's really the aim like giving a penalty to completely renounce their citizenship if they still have BNO, thus all people born pre-handover must handover their BNOs, etc. Even that scenario still has a lot of obstacles and questions arising on whether you can really enforce this kind of rules. In mainland where rules regarding dual citizenship is stricter, people still can find loopholes.
