Depends. A lot or maybe even all of the US defense industry companies depend on suppliers who depend on China. Typically they depend on China for rare earth metals; however defense companies like Boeing also have a line of products for civilians such as the 747 and 737 Max series. So, based on these new sanctions, if Pompeo or anyone of the 28 sanctioned officials got hired by them, those corporations can be sanctioned and potentially have their supply cut off and have no access to the Chinese market.
Explains why the US Department of Energy gave funding to Australian rare earths miner Lynas to set up a facility in the continental US

The sanctions also extend to their families as well; this means pompeo jr is only ever gonna find work in US military-industry
@hashtagpls ,

Do you think somebody from the Democratic party or from the Conservative wing of the Republican party advises China to do the list? It's not a Chinese way of doing things especially on diplomacy.

No, it is an internal CPC decision. The rationale is to send a warning to US politicians not to treat US-China relations like a playground. US-China relations are the most important bilateral relations in the world, and its effects are felt by everyone in the world. 中美关系是世界上最重要的双边关系

It's also retaliation for the nonsensical Uighur genocide declaration.

I like this nuclear option against individuals that includes their family members. Just look at members of Trump's Administration who were publicly anti-China but had or still have personal business dealings with China. I like how the US whined about this action as not helpful in Sino-US relations after Pompeo's final swipe at China. It shows how much of a hypocrite they are. It's about time China immediately retaliate when before they would wait like a year before doing anything. That's their high road thinking that no one recognizes so it doesn't work.

See the Wall Street Journal where Matthew Pottinger is from are liars and have always been. Of course they have to make the US look strong that China is "begging" for a meeting.

Indeed, with these Trump officials, the USG had crossed far, far too many of China's red lines. The current situation is no longer tenable and relations cannot go back to pre-Trump era. Even the Europeans know they can no longer rely on the anglo US and are pushing for independence, and China is willing to indulge them.

That incident in Houston late last year with persecuting Chinese researchers with any sort of military education is a particular sticking point; Now that China is the largest (disregarding american face saving number crunching) and most important economy in the world, and growing larger still, this move obviates the retirement plans of many, many Trump era officials.

It also kills Pompeo's presidential hopes, since any donor to pompeo's campaign will be shut out of China's market and its place given to its rivals, ala Australia.

China turns its attentions to the Middle East

Many leaders see it as more reliable than America

Once it got the coronavirus under control at home, China went on a diplomatic offensive. Its aid was gratefully received in the Middle East. Egypt, the Gulf states, Iran and Iraq all received shipments. “China has sent medical supplies and their best experts…whereas America has not provided us with a single vial,” said Jafaar Allawi, Iraq’s health minister at the time. (WTF you occupied Iraq and didn't send medical help during COVID?)

As America withdraws, China’s influence is growing. Just look at Iraq. Today China is its biggest trading partner and, according to a former electricity minister, “our primary option as a strategic partner in the long run.” The feeling is shared across much of the region.

Access to energy is China’s primary motivation, but its relationship with the Middle East goes beyond that. In return for oil China is building factories, ports and railways. It has helped Saudi Arabia with its nuclear programme. Huawei, a Chinese telecoms giant, does a large share of its 5G-networks business in the Middle East.

America views China as an economic and strategic competitor. So it has told Middle Eastern countries not to get too close. But many Arab leaders see China as a more reliable partner than America, which has been known to ask uncomfortable questions about human rights and, anyway, seems fed up with the region.

To be sure, a lot of Arab states still rely on America for arms and protection. China shows little interest in playing regional policeman. But its engagement is increasingly strategic. Take its draft co-operation agreement with Iran, under which the two would share intelligence and carry out joint research and weapons development. They already train together.

It is a tricky balancing act for China, which has sold drones to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Iran’s enemies. It is friendly with Israel, where Chinese state enterprises have leased ports. China has also built ports on the Indian Ocean, ostensibly for refuelling and resupply, that could be put to military use.

According to surveys of people in the region, China is a more popular global power than America or Russia. Its influence in the Middle East will only grow in 2021.
