The exorbitant prices that people in China pay for common meats like beef and pork are absolutely intolerable compared to how easily affordable they are to the average American. When the average blue collar Chinese worker can use the wages that he earned in an hour to buy his family a kilogram of whole cut fresh beef (not ground up fat bits or crap like that), then living in the West will lose its allure to the Chinese people.

China has LESS arable land as the USA or Russia, and the USA had in the 80s 50% more than China now.

Considering that one kg of meat require ten kg of grain there is little chance to see the meat prices going down much in China.

The biggest jump for the agricultural productivity is the nitrogen fertilizers,
It shown 50% increase since 2000, and the level of use peaked, so the best part of productivity gain exhausted.

With fertilizer the per hectare productivity could be doubled , anything else showing only marginal improvement.
(remark: best part of the Chinese natural gas import is for fertilizer manufacturing, and the biggest reason of the NK famine was the lack of oil for the Haber process to make fertilizer. One of the fist plant to converted to coal gasification was the NH3 plant in Anju)

Best strategy for China should be to increase the food import from Russia, from the new permafrost free areas. But even with that the food supply would be way less than for the average Russian .

China should be a world leader in GMO then. The knowledge of its arable land per capita has been known for many decades. It is completely unacceptable.

As always you can't shock the system too hard like India did with the recent farming regulation changes.

CCP has to find alternative lifestyles for those farmers that get outcompeted by big agri. Here's a video that just came out today actually:

If CCP is still against GMO then they need to look into areas such as vertical farming or turn the desert green.

Yes, but there are multiple other approaches that China can and should take to increase agricultural output including the massive project to divert water to irrigate previously non-arable land as well as GMO enhancements to crop yield and other advanced aricultural technologies.

I'm going to take this sentence here as my writing prompt to vent. There's quite a few characters on this site that take the laughable view that China is underpopulated and should increase its population by another billion or some such nonsense, because apparently the US is going to add a billion people - I guess they're going to build a Stargate to another dimension to get those people, because that's about the only conceivable way they could accomplish that. Anybody who sees the insanity of this is an Enemy of the People and a useful idiot for the - and this isn't my term - "globohomo" agenda.

How is this growing Chinese population of their fantasies supposed to be fed? China can barely keep up with feeding its growing middle class with meat, and some people here want to compound that? The closest thing they give to an answer is "vertical farming". If anyone thinks soy skyscrapers are ever going to be a thing, I would advise them to reduce the dosage on their hallucinogens.

The funny thing is, the problem actually has an answer. There is a way to not only drop meat prices in China through the floor, but feed another billion people with a middle-class diet on a fraction of the agricultural land in use in China today while maintaining 100% self-sufficiency. All it requires is redefining "meat" - and with that, let me introduce you to the most strategic technology in existence today:

I hate to come off as a fanboy for any company (let alone an American one), but those guys are the real deal. I had one of their "hamburgers" a while back and I could tell right away it wasn't beef - because it didn't have any disgusting gristle in it. It's better than the vast majority of what gets sold as beef. China needs to get on top of this synthetic hemoglobin technology quickly.

Bro we Chinese love authentic food too much to degrade ourselves to fake meat.

Artificially grown meat is more plausible than fake meat in China.

China has to embrace food tech or we're fucked as demonstrated by the African Swine Fever ordeal which is still ongoing due to lack of standards/technology.

How can we do brinksmanship if we cant even feed our own people to satisfaction.

I chat with my family back at home at least every other day and the food prices just keep rising. Shitty pork is like $4-6/lb. Still gotta pressure cook the beef.

Last Friday, December 18th, in an historic statement out of the Central Economic Work Conference, an annual gathering of top leaders and policymakers that plot the country's economic course for the following year, top CCP leaders said that they will industrialize biotech breeding as a part of a campaign to improve food security. Origin Agritech commends the government on this move toward GMO positive and stands by ready, as one of the top GMO seed companies in China, to rise to the challenge of supplying farmers with outstanding GMO corn and soybean seeds to facilitate this huge transformation of agriculture in China. These GMO seeds were developed with different traits to increase yields, reduce the need for insecticides, increase herbicide tolerance, salinity tolerance and to make the plants drought tolerant.

Gotta embrace technology, we embraced nukes, we gonna embrace this too.

You do know you're talking about the country that invented tofu, right?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, bro, but something's got to give somewhere. China's population either drops to a level where it can indulge its fetish for authentic animal carcasses using its own resources or it reconsiders its views on authenticity. But price mechanisms will force the issue eventually, when this technology becomes widely available and people understand that they can have all the taste and nutrition without having to hang diseased, miserable, anti-biotic and growth hormone-riddled animals upside down and rip out their intestines. Hell, I'm sure that even the feces flavouring of meat can be recreated with similar technology

And if you're waiting for cultivated muscle tissue, I hope you're a patient sort. If animal cells could be cultivated in a bioreactor cheaply enough to be used as food, it would revolutionize medicine purely as a side effect.

Let's do a poll here :p

I guess I can see that that algae stuff do well if they can get the taste better, make it suitable for stir fry.
