The sanctions from the PRC against the American defense firms, where they should restrict the sales and export of rare earths to them, is a very good strategic move.

President's Trump trade war and tech war against China, basically has failure. It brought no advantage of any sort to the United States.

China has gotten stronger. With the pandemic, China has gotten even more stronger.

This new attack from China onto the United States defence firms, keeps the dynamic of the trade war and tech war going. And one side is losing the trade war and tech war.

By escalating now, this keeps both countries firmly on this path.

The only way this will end now is for the United States to relent, or they do a first strike.

Not even a war, a real war will stop the Chinese from this strategy, only when the Americans relent that they CCP will stop.
Defence companies don’t buy rare earth ore. Other firms buy China’s rare earth ore and process them into other materials, which then other companies even further down the chain turn into components and parts, which then get bought by defense companies putting together products. You can’t target rare earth restrictions solely to companies that are two degrees removed from your point of sales. What you’re proposing is a very blunt tool, and restricting rare earth sales to such broad effects *will* blow back on Chinese industry too. Furthermore sustained restrictions of rare earth ore will just drive the US to build their own capacity to process this ore, which would basically blow back on China’s own rare earths industry.

They past the point of no return.

CCP should just hit them.

Sanctions would bring struggles to Lockheed Martin's production line of F-35s and Patriot missiles due to embargo of raw materials and rare earth metals supplied from China. Even if Lockheed Martin succeeds in finding alternate supply lines from countries/companies allied to the US, would they be able to get them at a bargain like they've been doing with China for decades now? I'll answer that for you - NO WAY JOSE. CCP sanctions would drive up costs of production and operation of the F-35, when Congress and the Department of Defense have been struggling for years to bring the costs down since the inception of the Joint Strike Fighter program. How then would you consider CCP sanctions ineffective?

The same logic applies to Raytheon with their need of Chinese raw materials to produce their engines, avionics, mechanical, and missile products. Boeing is already suffering massive loses from delayed deliveries due to COVID, alongside problems with the MAX (might I also add the Chinese Civil Aviation Authority was the first to ground the plane. While the FAA and EASA have re-certified the plane, China has yet to start the process despite Boeing's pleas). These sanctions would essentially see Boeing lose out on the largest commercial aviation market, especially when China has viable alternates in Airbus as well as COMAC.

With all due respect, how does all this appease the US???

This is an emotionally based sanction. If China objectives is to halt arms sales to Taiwan, these sanctions will not do that.
You are doing same error like Trump gov.

Inflict supply chain as well as financial pain. Boeing will be in extreme pain if it lost the China market. Lockheed and NG won't feel as much (obv) but again, supply chains if already exists are going to be disrupted
Taiwan can still get arms and your are just hitting yourself

When you are in a relationship where the other party is abusing you the best path is to walk away and focus on helping yourself. Only those without power try to retaliate, because the point of retaliation is to try to get enough leverage to demand better treatment. Retaliation is something that only desperate people do because they don’t have the power to just leave, or shrug off the attack.
Yes, China gov should just ignore US as they seem to do with Australia instead of trying to change their action

You’re not hitting who you think you’re hitting.
CCP has clearly indicated they can live with that.

If there are no more rare earths exports from China to America, that's fine, China will use it all anyways.

What happens in America, not really China's concern after that.

Good luck to them finding the stuff.

They want decoupling and now they have decoupling. Decoupling is suppose to be good. The United States should be happy.

I don't agree it is more like sending message " we will retaliate for any unjust sanction" Sofar China just stand still while the opponent pummel him with hit after hit. There price to pay for bad behaviour But China is too chicken to exact the price . There is many way to hit US like levy high tax for apple product. Apple does not do anthing for China development They bring component from all over the worls and let the OEM do the assembly work while they pocket huge margin.

Too many Xi adviser graduate from western university and they are chicken! disappointment where is Mao when we need him!

I'm Ok with China sending a message. And the message must be graduated. Begin by sell arms to NK or Iran. If they can't buy, give them.
That is more better than harm China’s own economy for now.

Yes, China Gov is full of people who want so much to be accepted by US.
