Up and until last July 2017 Chinese navy had escorted over 6400 ships, drove away 3,000 pirate ships and saved 60 ships

Over 21,000 sailors have been deployed and 83 vessels

On average each escort saves 2-3 Chinese or foreign ships

That’s pretty high and also forwarded deployed ships can have quicker reaction time

The statistics and quality of missions have been impressive

Chinese military lasers injure US military pilots in Africa

By Ryan Browne, CNN

Updated 1544 GMT (2344 HKT) May 3, 2018

(CNN)Chinese personnel at the country's first overseas military base in Djibouti have been using lasers to interfere with US military aircraft at a nearby American base, activity that has resulted in injuries to US pilots and prompted the US to launch a formal diplomatic protest with Beijing, two military officials told CNN.
The US issued a notice to airmen "to exercise caution when flying in certain areas in Djibouti," which "was issued due to lasers being directed at US aircraft on a small number of separate occasions over the last few weeks," according to the notice obtained by CNN.
"During one incident, there were two minor eye injuries of aircrew flying in a C-130 that resulted from exposure to military-grade laser beams, which were reported to have originated from the nearby Chinese base," the notice said.

Two US military officials told CNN that the issue was of major concern as such activity can cause major accidents. The officials said that the State Department had lodged a formal diplomatic protest with Beijing in an effort to get China to stop the activity.

Last month the US military was forced to briefly halt air operations in the East African nation of Djibouti, a critical location in the fight against terrorism, following a series of accidents involving aircraft. The halting of air operations was done at the request of Djiboutian government.
There are about 4,000 US personnel in Djibouti, based at Camp Lemonnier. The US military places a lot of importance on its ability to base forces in Djibouti given its critically strategic location near countries like Somalia and Yemen, where the US regularly targets terrorists in airstrikes.
But US officials have recently expressed concern about the growing influence of China in Djibouti, noting its establishment of its first military base there and its close economic links with the country.

Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, who oversees US Africa Command, acknowledged both challenges during an appearance before Congress in March.
"We are taking significant steps on the counterintelligence side so that we have all the defenses that we need there, there is no doubt about that," said Waldhauser, referring to the proximity of the new Chinese base.

In case for those who are wondering, the complete list of the PLAN's Escort Task forces from the first to the latest can be found in a convenient easy to read and detailed list at the Wiki page.

Given the preponderance of Type 054As used on the escort missions, its easy to forget all the other types of ships that were used in the escort missions. In the past, they have included:

Type 052 destroyers. DDG 112 Harbin appeared to have taken part no less than three of these missions.
Type 052B destroyers, one of whom was in the very first mission. DDG 169 Wuhan has taken part in two escort missions.
Type 071 LPDs. These appeared to have been used three times.
Type 053H3 frigates. These diminutive frigates have shown themselves capable of missions far from home shores. Gives me a sense of appreciation of these older designs.
Type 054 frigates. That's without the "A" and the VLS.
Type 051B, which is of course, the Shenzhen, before her refit.
Type 052C destroyers

Curiously missing are:

Type 052D destroyers.
Type 051C destroyers
All Project 956E/EM destroyers.

Your speculations as to why these three classes have not yet been used are as good as mine.

While all missions have the format of three ships, one particular mission, the 4th, stands out for having four ships, using the two Type 054s, one Type 054A, and one replenishment ship.

Modern "Norms" in size are interesting, the Type 053H3's are almost exactly the same size as the British Tribal Class Frigates

which were designed for patrol in the Persian Gulf i.e. the same mission as the PLAN escort task forces, but the 053H3s are considered "diminutive" in the modern context.

Indeed. "Destroyer" 112 Harbin, for example, would now be considered frigate size with its 4,200 ton displacement.
