"Air Commodore Paul Godfrey (Royal Air Force), the head of Carrier Enabled Power Projection, said that F-35Bs could be armed with next-generation smart weapons such MBDA’s SPEAR Cap 3 (Selective Precision Effects At Range, Capability 3) standoff air-to-surface missile.

However, the aircraft’s advanced sensors and networked data links meant the pilot would not be limited to his own weapons payload, but could also, for instance, launch Aster anti-air missiles from the silo of a Type 45 destroyer."

as far as I know, the RN cancelled the CEC back in 2012 (

so how an F-35B pilot "could" "launch Aster anti-air missiles from the silo of a Type 45 destroyer"?
Air Commodore Paul Godfrey (Royal Air Force), the head of Carrier Enabled Power Projection, please, sir:

The cooperative engagement with the F-35 is different to the Aegis CEC (assuming that is what you were referring to). One of the main technical challenge of the Aegis CEC is with the fusion of multi sensors and getting the fidelity of track data during its development. The F-35 game changing technology is that the sensor fusion is already fully developed and organic to the platform. The cooperative piece is simply piping into the MADL network. For that the Type 45 will need MADL antenna and to allow any data exchange to access the Type 45 fire control system to fire off the Aster. It will be no different when the F-35B at some stage will be cooperatively linked to the Typhoon when either Meteor or Spears can be launched with tracking data from the F-35B.

The race to design and build a new generation of Royal Navy frigates has been won a consortium led by Babcock. The firm has been named preferred bidder for the £1.25bn contract for five Type 31 warships.

....

Babcock's "Team 31" design is derived from the Iver Hutfeldt frigates developed for the Danish navy.

Probably the best choice. Babcock is using a tried and tested frigate as a baseline, so should work well. Plus I think it was potentially one of the larger hulls, so has more potential in the long run.

OK during a subway trip now I can think of why an F-35B pilot would shoot off an Aster of a Type 45 LOL and what her crew would say

Babcock Team 31 has been selected by the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) as the preferred bidder to deliver its new warships. Led by Babcock, the Aerospace and Defence company, and in partnership with the Thales Group, the T31 general purpose frigate programme will provide the UK Government with a fleet of five ships, at an average production cost of £250 million per ship.

Lieutenant General
Type 31e the “e” means export

£250 million a pop

Very cheap

Should have bought 13 units and add the 8 Type 26 to 6 Type 45 DDG

Original £13 billion for 13 FFG

Now £8 billion for 8 FFG

And £1.25 billion for 5 x Type 31e

Another £2 billion would buy 8 more Type 31e

That would put our navy at

6 x Type 45
8 x Type 26
13 x Type 31e

Total 27 units right now only 19 there is no “critical mass” in the navy
