Various variants of the PD-170 engine are going to be used on Turkish UAV's:

  • PD222ST is 5 kg lighter and 55 horsepower more powerful than PD170
  • It will be ready for mass production in 1 year
  • It will contribute to the take-off of Bayraktar TB3 from LHD with strong takeoff power output

TUSAŞ Engine Industries AŞ (TEI) exhibited the PD222ST engine, which is 5 kilograms lighter and 55 horsepower more powerful than Turkey's first turbodiesel aviation engine PD170, developed to power unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), at the Aviation, Space and Technology Festival TEKNOFEST.

TEI General Manager and Chairman of the Board Prof. Dr. Mahmut Faruk Akşit told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the PD170 was developed for the needs of Anka-S.

Explaining that the first Anka flew with an imported 155 hp engine and there were some problems in supply, Akşit said that they started working on the PD170.

Emphasizing that Turkish engineers have developed the world's highest altitude, least fuel-consuming engine with the design and production of its technicians, so that it can operate comfortably up to 40 thousand feet, Akşit pointed out that competing products are generally designed to operate at around 25 thousand feet.

Stating that after developing the main engine structure, they started to produce derivative engines for other needs by keeping the main frame of this engine the same, Akşit gave the following information about the PD222ST, which they exhibited for the first time:

"This is how we developed the PD222ST. There will be different versions of it. ST means single turbo. Single turbo version. We got 170 horsepower with twin turbo in PD170, but the main target there was altitude power. In the future, wars will be between unmanned vehicles, maybe UAVs. It will be happening in different parts of the world. We are talking about the dogfight of UAVs. It will be more agile, agile, maneuverable, with higher power at altitude, it will be able to walk very easily behind the UAV in front of it and hit it from any position it wants. Very serious. provides an advantage.

Being a twin-turbo provided all this, but for some applications, take-off power is more important than altitude. We want to take off from our TCG Anadolu ship loaded with Bayraktar TB3s from a short runway. Take-off power is also very important here, this engine has been specially designed for high take-off power. The power was increased by 55 horsepower, we increased it from 170 to 225. It still has high altitude capability, but the power it produces at high altitude is not as much as the PD170. When you go up to 35-40 thousand feet, the power becomes less."

More than 60 PD170s produced
prof. Dr. Akşit stated that they continue the mass production of the PD170 in addition to the development studies, "The engine we produced in total exceeded 60. We delivered a significant part of it to our first main customer, TAI, we delivered a few to Baykar, some of which will be used in Bayraktar TB3 studies. "The same engine is used in Aksungur, and some of it is to be used in the C version of Akıncı. Our same engine is used in Aksungur. The numbers of serial production are increasing, and we are currently negotiating for a few 100 units." said.

Easy to switch to advanced engine
Expressing that they exhibited the first prototype of the PD222ST at TEKNOFEST, Akşit said that the engine was subjected to serious tests and maturation processes continue. Pointing out that the test period is around 100 hours, Akşit pointed out that the test times on the PD170 exceeded 5 thousand hours. Akşit said:

"We may not have to test the PD222ST that much since we're testing the base engine in these conditions, but it will undergo a more rigorous testing process. It also needs a year to go into mass production. We'll see that it flies and goes into mass production in the next year," he said. We aim to announce that which of our customers will be the first to use this engine. It is almost the same weight as the competitor engine. While the competitor engine is 155 hp, this gives 225 hp. It will provide great advantages in terms of take-off power and runway distance. It can be Bayraktar TB3 and Akıncı C, now which Baykar? I don't know if it is ahead. We are developing derivative engines to be used with the same interface as the PD170 in order to maximize the number of vehicles it is used in. Minor touch-ups are required in the integration, but an advanced engine can be installed after making its first flight in the PD170. This is Aksungur, Akıncı, Anka, Bayraktar TB3 can do."

Turkish firm begins producing UAV engines​

Erin Motor's engines can be used in drones with up to 5-meter wingspan​


Previously, TUSAS Engine Industries (TEI) was the only Turkish firm that could produce engines for UAVs, he recalled. (...)

Defence journalist Ibrahim Sunnetci has some new info about the Gokhan ramjet BVR missile:

"The F-16 version of our National METEOR Missile GÖKHAN is also coming. According to the information I have learned, following the acquisition of METEOR by the Greek Air Force, the work has accelerated for a version of the HvKK(TUR-AF) GÖKHAN Missile that can be used in F-16s.
Accordingly, the F-16 version of GÖKHAN will enter service a little earlier than the version developed for the MMU/TF-X. TÜBİTAK SAGE is still working on the RamJet engine.
GÖKHAN, which I think will have bidirectional data link capability, is expected to be used primarily in F-16 Block 30 Aircrafts that have seen ÖZGÜR modernisation and gained AESA radar capability. ASELSAN, TUSAŞ and TÜBİTAK SAGE engineers are expected to cooperate in the integration process of AESA radar and GÖKHAN."

The 200th Bayraktar TB2 was produced

Baykar Defense produced the 200th Bayraktar TB2. Engineers signed a memorial painting to commemorate the production of the 200th Bayraktar TB2 at Baykar Defense's production facility in Istanbul. Bayraktar TB2 made its first flight on 29 April 2014. Bayraktar TB2, which successfully completed 200,000 flight hours on June 10, 2020, broke a new record in the history of Turkish aviation. Poland, Ukraine, Qatar, Libya and Azerbaijan; Bayraktar is known as the countries that bought TB2. Apart from these, about 10 more countries are closely interested in Bayraktar TB2.

We have seen number 218 at Teknofest so that is 18 TB2 produced in 2 months. Yearly production rate is thus 108 TB2!!

Planning to purchase 4 more Bayraktar TB2 systems (24 units) in the 2021-2022 program, the Ukrainian Armed Forces sent 75 more personnel to Turkey for training.

On the other hand, they continue negotiations with Turkey for the establishment of a training center in Ukraine.

General Manager Faruk AKŞİT: “We are in talks with GE and TUSAŞ to produce these engines in Turkey, just like the T700-TEI-701D engine. Although it is not completely TEI production, we want to produce at least 40-50% of the engine (F404-GE-102) in Turkey.”

General Manager Faruk AKŞİT: “You know the engine of the T700-TEI-701D local Black Hawks. Our serial production continues and as of now, we have produced the 50th Engine. The share of locality, which was around 20% in the 1st engine, has now exceeded 50%.

Are there plans to integrate BVR missiles with existing AN/APG radar?

If I had to guess, only for tests and not for fleet wide integration. That is reserved for the new AESA radar.

It is a tricky question because of the older mission computer that has been replaced with a newer one during the CCIP upgrades. Turkey bought the source codes of the older MC which only the block 30's are flying with. Theoretically they could integrate it on these older F-16's but they'll prolly wait for the AESA radar and Ozgur upgrade.

TÜBİTAK SAGE KUZGUN Guided Modular Munitions Family to Start Shooting Tests in the Last Quarter of 2021! The first shot will be made this year with the KUZGUN Free Floating (SS) ammunition. In this context, TUBITAK SAGE is in talks with both TUSAŞ and BAYKAR DEFENSE. Afterwards, shooting will be started with the KUZGUN-TJ (TurboJet) version. Since the integration with UCAV is more easier than the combat aircraft (F-16/F-4), UCAV is preferred in fire tests. For combat aircraft, the integration process is longer and the number of aircraft that can be used is less.
