Turkey now needs to get the second one under construction ASAP

Soon Turkey will field 2 x LHD

And also Egypt has 2 x LHD

Together the Eastern Mediterranean will be a busy place with many naval helicopters

Off course Turkey needs TF2000 DDG in good numbers to provide air defence and cover for this flat deck LHD

I am not exactly 100% sure why Turkey is so hell bent on S400

on the other hand I know its a top end system

but still

My theory is that the selection was originally based on merit, i.e. capability/cost/tech transfer. When the Americans started threatening to reneg on their existing contracts, that both made it an issue of national pride and reinforced the argument for not relying solely on American hardware. Obviously the broader situation in Syria (where the American position involves close alignment with the Kurds who are anathema to Turkey) and the personal qualities of Erdogan contributed to the current situation also.

Given the historical differences between Turkey and Russia, and even the recent past where they were on opposite sides re: Assad in Syria, punctuated by the shooting down of a Su-24, the current relationship between Turkey and Russia, and deteriorating relationship between Turkey and the US, and (to a lesser extent) Turkey and Europe, represents an enormous coup for Russia. In Moscow they probably can't believe their luck.

(It also helps Russia that Turkey's biggest advocate in Europe, the UK, is currently doing its best to alienate itself from other European nations.)

I think it was for three reasons. 1) Turkey wants to have the native capability to manufacture their own hardware. 2) In a previous contest a Chinese SAM system won on merits but was blocked by the USA, who then never made a proper counter offer. 3) The coup attempt against Erdogan which was at least partly orchestrated by the USA.

I suspect there is another reason for selecting the S-400 but I would rather not elaborate on that.

Erdogans Ego probably also didn’t help

Also he’s not known to back down

Having said that yes the Chinese did win the Turkish SAM contract I remember that

Imagine it went through

Billions for China

But question is, if China won the SAM contract based on capability over S400 why on earth did China buy S400?

Because 1) China operates many S300PMU-2 batteries, 2) S400 was an upgrade of S300 (formerly known as S300PMU-3). Buying S400 is upgrade to the existing systems if one don't want to waste the existing assets. One don't dump his perfectly working 2018 Mercedes just because BMW comes out with a new model in 2019.

my point was if Turkey selected Chinese system over S400 it means the Chinese system was superior to S400

yet China selected S400 over its own domestic systems
