Navy have 6 in order and also use 2 normal ATR-72 for transport alongside 4 CN-235 MPA ASW/ASuW

A new batch of photos from Turkish Navy ATR-72-600 TMPA plane has emerged. The photos from last year showed an unpainted airplane where as this year the plane seems to be fully painted.

The first plane should have been delivered back in February 2017. But like the

, this Meltem-III has been too plagued by notorious delays.

In July 2005, Italian Prime Minister Mr. Berlusconi and his Turkish counterpart Mr. Erdoğan signed a deal on acquisition of 10 maritime patrol planes based on Alenia’s ATR-72 500 turboprop aircraft. According to the $219-million contract the initial deliveries were supposed to be in 2010.

The first ATR-72 500 arrived in Turkish Aerospace Industries in February 2008. TAI worked as Alenia’s local sub-contractor, carrying out all modifications from the base airframe to the ATR-72 MPA configuration. In May 2013, suddenly there was a big change in the project. The project was downsized from 10 planes to 8. 2 utility models for personnel and cargo transportation, and 6 armed maritime patrol models. The good part of this rearrangement was the upgrade from ATR-72 500 which, was no longer in production, to ATR-72 600.

In July 2013 the first utility model was delivered to Turkish Navy. In August 2013 the first base ATR-72 600 was delivered to TAI for the changes to MPA configuration. I think, the plane, seen in the above photo is this first plane.

I was able to identify the following items on board:

  1. Magnetic anomaly detector antenna
  2. ESM antenna
  3. Radar warning and laser warning antennas
  4. Aft looking countermeasure dispenser or unknown antenna
  5. Countermeasure dispenser
  6. Radar
  7. Torpedoes
  8. FLIR
These planes are armed with two Mk-46 and Mk-54 lightweight torpedoes and will carry Thales AMASCOS maritime patrol mission system that integrates an array of sensors.
According to the original timeline the first plane should have been already in service and the remaining ones join the service in 2018. I have no idea about the new schedule.

I mean, Turkey with both F-35 and Triumph, seriously?
according to DefenseNews Turkey, close to S-400 deal, also goes for Eurosam solution

Every new day Turkey and Russia are inching closer to a final deal on the Turkish acquisition of the Russian-made S-400 air defense architecture. But the Ankara government also said it reached a deal with the European group Eurosam to develop a similar air and anti-missile defense system.

Rostec, the Russian company brokering the S-400 deal, has said that Ankara and Moscow agreed on all technical matters for the S-400 program – which US officials warn and Turkish authorities admit would not be interoperable with the U.S. and NATO assets deployed on Turkish soil. Turkish ambassador to Moscow, Huseyin Dirioz, has said that the Turkish work to assess the Russian solution is continuing.

“The S-400 solution stems from [Turkey’s] urgent requirement,” Turkish Defense Minister Fikri Isik said.

But Isik also said that Turkey and Eurosam have agreed to jointly develop a similar air and anti-missile defense system “in line with Turkey’s requirements.”

“This [Eurosam program] is a high-caliber and big project … involving research and development and co-production,” Isik said. “Turkey, Italy and France will seek to define the [air defense] requirement for all three countries.” Eurosam is a majority Italian-French partnership.

Earlier this year the Turkish government said it may buy the S-400 for its near-mystery program to build the country’s first long-range air and anti-missile defense system.

For its long-range air defense system, dubbed T-LORAMIDS, Turkey in September 2013 selected China Precision Machinery Import-Export Corporation’s $3.44 billion solution, which defeated rival bids from Eurosam, maker of the SAMP/T; a consortium of Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, maker of the Patriot system; and the Russian-made S-300/S-400 option.

Under pressure from its NATO allies, Turkey later scrapped the preliminary deal with CPMIEC and the competition. Since then Ankara has held talks with the Western contenders, but it also commissioned two domestic state-controlled companies, Aselsan and Roketsan, to locally develop the system.
LOL I wonder how a Military operating both F-35s and Triumphs would fit into the world of various Analysts
I'd be at a total loss

oops now I imagined an exercise which would pitch these weapons against each other

TURKEY SIGNS ONTO EUROSAM ASTER 30-BASED SAMP/T PROGRAM

Turkey has signed a “cooperation agreement” with the French-Italian air defence consortium Eurosam, ostensibly for Eurosam’s Aster 30-based SAMP/T (short for Surface-to-Air Missile Platform/Terrain) long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system.

Turkey’s Minister of Defence announced the agreement at the French embassy’s Bastille Day reception in Ankara on Friday, July 14 (via

for the SAMP/T since September with the aim of ushering a two-stage program: First, to import Aster 30 SAM systems to strengthen Turkey’s integrated air defence system (IADS). Second, to accrue technology from Eurosam and co-produce the Aster-30.

sources report that the agreement involves a “24-month definition phase funded by the Turkish government … [which] will immediate lead to the full-scale development phase … [for] late 2019 or early 2020 at the latest.” It adds that the SAMP/T is being sought in

The centrepiece of the SAMP/T is the Aster 30, which was introduced in 1988. It has a range of more than 100 km and is deployable from land and from surface warships.

In 2016, Eurosam initiated the Aster 30 Block 1 New Technology (B1NT) program, which is tipped with a Ka-band active radar-homing seeker, which offers longer terminal-stage engagement range and enhanced angular resolution. Eurosam is positioning the B1NT for neutralizing

Eurosam was competing with the Medium Extended Air Defence System (MEADS), a consortium made up of U.S., German and Italian companies. The core the MEADS is the PAC-3 MSE (Patriot Advanced Capability Missile Segment Enhancement).

Notes & Comments:

Although these are big-ticket off-the-shelf acquisitions, the Turkish Undersecretariat of Defence Industries (SSM) stated on several occasions that Turkey will have a

.

It is not known what impact the SAMP/T and S-400 will have on the Turkish SAM program, but the program seems to be of importance to the Turkish government. Turkey’s future anti-air warfare (AAW) frigate, the TF-2000, is also envisaged to use a domestic long-range SAM system.

Although speculation, it is possible that the co-production elements of the SAMP/T and/or S-400 could accompany targeted technical support for the Turkish SAM program.

MBDA OUTLINES PLANS FOR SAM TECHNOLOGY COLLABORATION WITH TURKEY

The French-Italian air defence consortium Eurosam has signed a “Heads of Agreement” (HoA) with Turkish defence companies Aselsan and Roketsan to fulfill the Turkish Undersecretariat of Defence Industries (SSM)’s call for a locally produced long-range air and missile defence system.

The HoA was signed on July 14 in Ankara.

In its

, MBDA stated, “The HoA sets the work sharing agreements for a definition study with the SSM on a long-range air and missile defence system to be launched in the coming months.”

reported that the “definition study” will be concluded within 24 months, after which Eurosam, Aselsan and Roketsan will proceed to develop a system for the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK).

MBDA has confirmed that this system will effectively form the basis of Turkey’s own air defence program, “The future Turkish air and missile system will be based on the technologies and experience that Eurosam has built in ground and naval systems.”

It is unclear if the TSK will also acquire Aster 30 SAMP/T (Surface-to-Air Missile Platform/Terrain) batteries off-the-shelf or if it will solely acquire the joint Eurosam, Aselsan and Roketsan system. Ankara is in

with Moscow for the latter’s S-400 long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system.

In 2015, Turkey had intended to close a $3.44 billion U.S. deal with China Precision Machinery Import Export Corp (CPMIEC) for the latter’s HQ-9 long-range SAM system. However, pressure from NATO pushed Ankara to walk away from that program and re-open its long-range SAM program for bids.

In November 2015, the SSM tasked Aselsan and Roketsan to develop a homegrown solution. However, during 2016 Ankara had begun negotiating with Moscow and Western firms for air defence systems – the SSM and Turkey’s Ministry of Defence (MoD)

with Eurosam in September 2016.

Despite these engagements, the SSM had reiterated that a domestic long-range SAM system was still in the pipeline. It is apparent that this system will be developed in collaboration with Eurosam.

Besides augmenting Turkey’s land-based air defence network, the new SAM system will also accompany the Turkish Navy’s future TF-2000 anti-air warfare (AAW) frigate. While this SAM will draw from the Aster-30, it is not known if it will be a copy or a derivative. The latter avenue could enable Turkey (and Eurosam) to examine new applications, such as quad-packing (like the Standard Missile series), among others.

Interesting to note that Turkey has launched 7 auxiliary/support/cargo ships in the last 3 years

A582 MOSHIP in 2014
A583 and A584 RATSHIP in 2014
L402 and L403 LST in 2015 and 2016
A575 and A584 Logistics support ship in 2016 and 2017

Add in 2 x Ada class

That's 9 ships

So will it be the Eurosam or the S-400 for Turkey?o_O
well Turkey's Erdogan says signatures signed on Russian defense system

Turkey has made progress in plans to procure an S-400 missile defense system from Russia and signatures have been signed, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday.

"Steps have been taken and signatures signed with Russia concerning the S-400s. God willing we will see the S-400s in our country," Erdogan told lawmakers from his ruling AK Party at a party meeting in parliament.

NATO member Turkey said in April it had reached a "final stage" in talks to procure the air missile defense system. Turkey will not be able to integrate the Russian S-400 into the NATO system.
