Maybe the 3D printing table wasn't large enough to make a full sized one so they only made half of one.

What is the latest situation in HÜRJET's journey to Malaysia?

Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) Deputy General Manager of Aircraft Prof. Dr. Atilla Doğan explained the latest situation of HÜRJET's journey in the Malaysian tender to SavunmaSanayiST.com.

Prof. Dr. Doğan made the following statements regarding the subject: “Our main goal when starting the HÜRJET Project was to meet the needs of our own air forces. But we did not start the project just for this purpose, there is a serious overseas sales potential. We are already doing a market analysis when starting the project. In the market analysis, a feasibility study is being conducted as to how many of these aircraft and in which configurations we can sell as TAI. Therefore, HURJET has a serious overseas acquisition potential.

Although we haven't made the first flight of the plane yet, we have now started to enter international tenders. tender in Malaysia; "Light Strike Fighter" tender, not a "Jet Trainer". Initially, 18 aircraft will be supplied, but we know that additional packages will be ordered later.

We entered this tender and submitted our offer. It is currently under evaluation. We expect a decision to be made in the first quarter of this year, by March 2022.

We know that in addition to Malaysia, many foreign countries are also interested in this aircraft. They ask for information about our plane on different occasions. They give us feedback on the design, development, flight phases and final configuration of the aircraft. We also take these feedbacks into account during the design phase.”

Finalists are Hurjet, Tejas, and Mig-35? For some reason both FA-50 and JF-17 quit the tender.

Maybe the 3D printing table wasn't large enough to make a full sized one so they only made half of one.
That would mean that you have to join the two halves by welding perhaps. It is difficult to weld titanium, the quality of the weld is also an extra risk of stress and material fatigue. I doubt there is a point to use 3D printing plus welding than purely forging.

I'd say that either one use 3D printing for the whole piece, or forging, there is no compromised clever alternative. To be honest, US is one of the earlier (than China) runner in the field, Turkey is not. If US still can't do it now and China only did it very recently, there is no chance that Turkey could jump over all these leaders, it is the same thing in engine work, enough time has to be spent before achieving something.
