Poland's Bayraktar TB2s will be equipped with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) manufactured by the Italian company Leonardo.

Poland will be the first country to take Bayraktar TB2 UCAVs into its inventory with SAR Radar. According to the information obtained by SavunmaSanayiST.com. Italian Leonardo company will deliver 2 Osprey 30 multifunctional AESA radars per set to be used in Bayraktar TB2 S/UAVs exported to Poland.

Radars will significantly increase the TB2's intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance (ISR) capability and situational awareness, and will provide the ability to operate in cloudy weather. Bayraktar TB2s will also have limited air surveillance capabilities thanks to the radar, which also has air-to-air search modes.

The Osprey is a multimode SWaP (light, cheap, powerful and small) AESA radar operating in the X band developed by Leonardo. Radar that can be used in fixed or mobile configurations; It has air-to-land, sea and air modes. It can perform maritime patrol, search and rescue, SAR mapping and many more tasks. The radar, which has a maximum range of 200NM (350+ kilometers) against naval targets, has 256 GaAs T/R modules. In addition, there are LRUs (Line Replacable Units) that allow easy part replacement in case of any malfunction in the radar. The Osprey radar is already integrated into many platforms such as the AW101 and AHRLAC.

Did Turkey sign any cooperation agreements with Ukraine on Space Launch technology? Specifically, engines? Some countries like India cooperate with Ukraine to develop rocket engines and other technologies. Ukraine is quite proficient with space technology.

I'm not really a follower of space related stuff but afaik, nothing concrete has come out yet or they are keeping it below the radar for now.

Hmm, I don't think Turkey went to Ukraine and YSD for picnic. There will have to be some documents signed and agreements made. But since Ukraine is in US camp, the chances are slim.

TAI is designing, developing and producing the various transmission systems needed for the Gokbey, Atak II, Hurjet and TF-X.

  • Serial production of Anka/Aksungur's gearbox continues.
  • Gokbey gearbox is going through qualification and certification tests.
  • Hurjet accessory gearbox has passed critical design phase, is now at manufacturing and procurement phase with the first prototype aimed to be delivered in the second quarter of 2022.
  • Heavy attack helicopter gearbox design phase is going on (since 2019).
  • TF-X accessory gearbox will also be designed and produced by Tusaş.

SSB director Prof Demir statements about the request for purchase of extra F-16's: and modernization:

  • This issue will also be a test of how well-intentioned the US administration and congress are towards Turkey.
  • We will walk by increasing everything we can do on our own in the modernization of the F-16.
  • And if all else fails then Turkey will make its own F-16.

Turkey has quite a lot of options to fill in the gap till the TF-X comes online. It can purchase extra F-16's, modernize older F-16's both on its own and/or with US support, can produce combat capable Hurjet and ofcourse the supersonic MIUS.

What about a larger MIUS powered by the indigenous TF-141 and using the TF-X subsystems and avionics? It might very well be developed after the MIUS.

Being kicked out of the F-35 program does inflict short term pain but Turkey gains in the mid and long term.

It is interesting how Iran has manged to keep the F-4, F-5 and F-14 flying after all these years. Turkey having build the F-16 in house will have a much easier job to keep the F-16 flying.

I wonder what the consequences will be for Turkish aerospace projects if Russia invades Ukraine like rumors say? Won't that trow a spanner in their projects? Akinci, MIUS and the ATAK II rely on engines from Motor-Sich which is situated in Zaporizhzhia which might very well be occupied by Russia in the event of an invasion.

Can Turkey find alternatives for these engines? The Atak II could use the T700 but wont be ideal because it's relatively weak or it could use European equivalents like the Makila 2A1 until the indigenous 3000hp turboshaft engine is ready, but will the Europeans allow that? The MIUS could use the FJ44-4 for its subsonic version and the F125 for the supersonic but will the US allow that?

I hope Turkey achieves to get all the smart heads of Ukrainian gas turbine industry out of Ukraine and into Turkey before it's too late.

Not exactly privy of Turkey US relations but wouldn't US put extra sanctions on Turkey for manufacturing without license ? licenses have to be involved here. If Turkey could buy S400, why don't it consider Su35 or even the Su57 ?

Yes, but Turkey would only do it in the extreme case or it uses it as a means to further pressure to get the US to cooperate. Whether this pressure will succeed is a different story.
