This will definitely give the US more leverage over China even if they only account for 4% of China's energy imports. They are also sneaking a drone here and there into Russian refineries chipping away at China's energy sources diversity, blowing up a rail section here and there in Myanmar. Little things eventually compound into something considerable. Other exporters can also use this as leverage against China. And it's not like energy is the only problem here. If they take control of the state, they can cancel all business with China and divert it toward the US or just halt it much like in other countries they occupy. They can also turn it into a poverty ridden terrorist hub designed to attack other Chinese business in neighbouring countries etc.. When it comes to the US and its nihilism, the sky's the limit.
I'm not sure what you mean by bait them, China's will do absolutely nothing beyond the usual condemnation statements.
This is nothing like Afghanistan. Venezuela is neither as far as Afghanistan, nor is it landlocked or shares a border with serious adversaries. Simply bombing their infrastructure, ports, and imposing a naval blockade, then waiting them out would likely do the job, and would probably drop Cuba as well. Both are already on the brink of collapse. Unless the US is a static object that doesn't absorb lessons, we can safely assume they learned some valuable imperialist lessons from Afghanistan that they won't repeat in Venezuela.
