I haven't seen any indication from credible sources that says mamdani is retracting this promise. I've only seen the usual maga crowd parroting this. Until there is actual evidence for this, I wouldn't put too much value into this tweet.

He just doesn't need to do anything and people will probably forget after a while. Just say I'm working on it but there's some obstacles/paperwork to handle first blah blah blah.
True, US politicians and broken promises is one hell of a duo. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes the same route too. Election nowadays are more based on vibes than substances.
The central government is Trump's. He will do anything to sabotage him so he will have to make concessions. That's politics when are applied on the framework of "democracy"

Not just US politicians. Switch and baits at elections is basically standard these days in democracies across the world.
But lying politicians are actually the lessor of the problem. The real core problem why democracy is a failed ideological pipe dream is because the voters themselves are the true problem.
The three actual times in recent years where the voters got exactly what they voted for have been unmitigated disasters. The first was Brexit, the second was Milei and the third was Trump 2.0.
Democracy isn’t magic. The stars don’t align to grant your wish and turn shit to gold just because you all voted for it to be so.
Governments should serve the best interests of the people, and the people should get a say in how policies are decided to chart the course of the nation. But western style democracy is perhaps the worst method ever devised to deliver that end result, because it was never ever designed to actually deliver that result. Modern western democracy is just one giant reality TV distraction to give the people the illusion of control and choice, even as their true rulers tightens the screws to squeeze more and more wealth from them, so they continue to toil and suffer for ever diminishing crumbs while their overlords gets fatter and greedier and presses them for more while the people turn their hatred against the puppets on TV or each other or migrants. Anyone is fine so long as it’s not the true overlords actually responsible for making their lives so shit.
As the saying goes, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. How many times have wester voters been fooled? Yet they continue to lap up the same old shit with zero will to do anything to actually improve their situation other than be more hateful towards each other and the minorities their rulers wants them to hate.

In this view, the movement to make Trump a new king for a new Trumpian dynasty can be seen as the American people self correcting. The choices for such societies appear to be fascism (trump as the new king or fuhrer) or communist revolution.
The fascists will win this.
