The War in the Ukraine

Col. Macgregor explains that the 31 M1 Abrams tanks to be sent to Ukraine will have to be “built from scratch”. The US will not allow the complex composite armor on its tanks to end up in Russian hands. Therefore, Ukraine will get the 1970s armor package:

The British Dorchester composite armour is even more advanced. It will be a pointless endevour if the Russians get their hands on a Challenger 2.

Personally, I find that ISW's coverage of the war has been among the worst. I don't trust a word they say unless it is verified from other sources. I remember even Def Mon (one of the most anti-Russian accounts who "maps" the conflict) chastised them for marking one of the islands in the Dnieper as "Ukrainian captured" just because an Ukrainian squad planted a flag there (before quickly retreating to their own side of the Dnieper). With all of the misses they had, and the way they uncritically believe all Ukrainian claims, I can't take them seriously whatsoever.

Anyway, something I saw today.

The GLSDB would be a significant upgrade to Ukraine's formidable HIMARS platforms which have been used with deadly precision and effects thank to NATO ISR. The brochure for this munition can be found on Saab's website.

Since advances have largely slowed to a crawl, daily updates have been unfeasible. ISW doesn't seem to realize this, and instead fills their "analysis" with speculation. Honestly, outside of the beginning of the conflict, ISW has been pretty trash.

I’m not sure why you’d think they’d be getting a 70s armour package, more advanced non-DU packages are out there. Abrams’ armour package has been upgraded numerous times, and those must’ve involved more than just a different DU composition. Either way, we don’t know what the armour will be yet.

"The 31 M1A2 main battle tanks that Biden officially authorized on Tuesday would not be taken from U.S. military stockpiles, but would be procured under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. They would be built to task, without the depleted uranium armor, for delivery late this year or next."

What I was saying was that the composite would not be the same composite that the abrams originally came with when it was developed, as much improvement has been done with each variant and sub-variant.

I'm calling it, Ukraine will be getting those M1A2T originally intended for ROC. Same pattern as Javelin, Stinger, TOW-2, AGM-88B HARM, HIMARS ammo.

I doubt Taiwan would be happy with that, especially given unlike the Ukrainians they are actually paying for them.

I don't think the Americans are serious about giving Abrams. Leopards are much better suited to the Ukrainian needs.

They agreed to send them only to unlock the Germans and others releasing theirs, and they'll just stonewall the delivery with excuses like the recent one about them having to build M1s from scratch.
