Not surprising that the PL-2 missed its target. Short range infra red AAM of that era have low hit rates. Even US sidewinder of Vietnam era had low hit rates of around 15%, until AIM-9L begin to show up in 1976 and raised its kill rate to around 80%.

Early AAM like PL-2 and Sidewinder were effective only if aimed and fired from 6 o'oclock of target. The target can easily break missile lock by hard turns.

Even Israel and South Africa have a same problem when use the Matra Magic 550 but later French fixed it and its good perform in Iran Iraq war (1980-1989) Iraq loved so they replace Atoll with Magic
