If AIDC is to be funded for IDF upgrde or ADF project, I'd like to see a real commitment to production numbers. Otherwise it'd be a deja vu of billions spent, then US authorize F-16 sales and IDF production chopped in half.

Within the next 5 years, ROC's entry terms to WTO would prevent government procurement from demanding xx% of domestically made products. Military goods is one of very few exempt areas to this rule. But convincing people to invest in ROC's domestic industry is an uphill battle.

Frankly, the people with big money don't like "Made in Taiwan". This is a long-standing problem that I could rant for hours about, but this is not the place.

As for the conscription issue, if they reduce training to 4 months, will they require annual refreshers? Like annual 2-week training for x number of years, and service in the "national guard"

The ROCN could use some DCN Scorpene class submarines, perhaps a tech transfer for local assembly. Good luck on that one though.

I agree with the general sentiment here that the Taiwanese will turn to the French first (because their politicians seem to be totally biased against building at home) and probably be rejected, so they will then turn to their domestic industry. This situation really calls for a new fighter, not just upgrades. Perhaps an F-CK-2 or something (with a better name, F-CK is terrible:D).

I'm surprised that the US missed this chance to bring a big contact to a major US company during this economy. I guess they figured that less Chinese cooperation on the global economy wasn't worth it. Yet another quiet win for China's soft power.

The Rafale though will have to be modified to meet ROCAF requirements though, I have read the existing Snecma M88 engine has issues with tropical climates.

Customers can ask for specific set ups/requirements in their orders, like UAE did for their M2000-9 for example. As far as I am concerned, I havent heard of any tropical concerns with SNECMA M88-2 engines... did you read this on articles from lobbyist journalists? ;):coffee:

Thats why most people don't expect too much from politicians....

I agree that we need a new fighter...but perhaps not another Ching Kuo name.....its like everytime I look up on the internet, you have to remember its ultra long name.....perhaps something simple....

The US has too much to worry about...especially North Korea. Once a few of their problems are gone, they might see the "error" of their ways and sell them.

Well its named after a president, perhaps such a project would be named F-ZR-2 (Li Zongren) which ia much better name. If they named it after Yen Chia-kan it would just be F-CK-2.

The question is, France may be the only other country that Taiwan could turn to but are they willing to see to Taiwan? Of course Dassault is desperate for orders, very desperate in fact. Either the Rafale or second hand Mirage 2000-9 (France's wants to buy back their Mirage 2000-9s, refurbish them and resell them) would make excellent additions to the ROCAF (they have far more MICA's in their inventory than AIM-120s) but does France have the political will to try their luck with selling weapons to Taiwan again? Afterall it was only a few years after Tiananmen Square and the PRC was suddenly a pariah state to the west again, selling weapons to Taiwan nowadays would incur the wrath of a far more influential state than the PRC was in 1992. France though has been the most vocal about its opinion of the PRC, it seems everything they have done relating to the PRC has been damaging for the past few years.

Aero_Wing_32, I actually sort of forgot where I read this. I think it was something related to the Saudi deal that Dassault blew a few years ago.

Well the Saudi deal on Typhoons... we shouldn t talk about it... The case is closed now, but lobbyists were very efficient. :coffee:

Why didn't they think of replacing the F-5s earlier? Imagine 250 IDFs....that would be awesome!

Because when the IDF entered production the F-5s didn't need replacing and they didn't have a bottomless pit of money to buy a full order of IDFs and the F-16s.
