The oldest J-11s and J-10s would be equivalents. Anything more is an overmatch. Really though, only the J-16 fleet would be enough for both Taiwanese airforce and air defenses. According to wiki three-thirds of AIM-9s in the Taiwanese arsenal are rear aspect-only missiles.

if that were the case what do Taiwanese mirage carry now? are they compatible with other missiles or are they just waiting for retirement?

They can't fit domestic missiles like the Skybow series on the Mirages since that would require revamping the fire control system but it is not easy and the French definitely won't help them. As a result, when the Taiwanese Mirages fly on intercept missions, they carry more missiles than usual in case that some of the expired missiles are still working.

Ok, we are way off topic now. The scarcity of Taiwan military news has taken its toll ...
It used to be the case that there was little interest in this thread unless there was concrete news and even then it was limited.

For some reason in the last 6-12 months there's been an obsession about Taiwan by some people, particularly newer members, so for some reason they feel the need to keep talking about Taiwan, primarily to shit on the ROC military but sometimes to say anything. I remember one guy actually made some suggestions on what he would do to improve the ROC's defence posture, but I think he may have ended up getting banned. (Apologies if I'm confusing him with someone else.)

It's happened on other threads as well, like the UK thread. For some reason people feeling the need to mock other countries or get upset over nothing, rather than just have mature discussions. It's like the forum's been flooded by teenagers.

This is a good video about the "IS Taiwan indefensible?" This is a debate between two groups of people. One argues that Taiwan is basically a lost cause and therefore allocate US energy and money at somewhere else. The other group argues that Taiwan is work dying for the "values and norms of democracy" to save face in front of our Asian allies. By the way I love how Lyle Goldstein puts it. The other two that are against the referendum are in a delusional state.

Partial video:

Full video of the debate (it's an hour long):
Imo it's a bit of both, Taiwan is indefensible to an extent, but the US should still focus on it. I like the current US policy and pushing boundaries because it's clear China is in the less favorable position.
