Quantity has its own quality. Yes they are "old" tech. But they are still missiles. They can still hit a ship and sink it. And its not like the PLAN has unlimited magazine depth to intercept them.

The more these systems are introduced, the more complex a military conflict will be.

Yes PLAN would most likely be ok, but thats another thing they have to worry about. We will see what other systems the US is planning to sell Taiwan
Come on they are ashm do you really think they would have a chance of launching this against PLAN ships? These missiles will be taken out in the first few hours of conflict.

Why? Mobile AShM launchers are not magic and die just as easily to missiles and bombs; and need active radar guidance to engage long range.

Harpoons are also simple subsonics and the easiest type of AShM to intercept even if any do managed to get launched.

The PLAN would be more concerned by the supersonic HFs Taiwan has developed indigenously, so the more money Taiwan wasted buying harpoons at exorbitant rates, the fewer HFs they can afford and the happier the PLAN will be.
mobile ashm launchers can be moved around after the missiles are fired, the taiwanese military has even openly stated that mobile launchers can adopt "hit-and-run" tactics and generally has a greater survival rate compared to fixed sites. as for indigenous missiles (the hf-2 and hf-3) they suffer from a low production rate due to a variety of issues so purchasing the harpoons will be a great force multiplier for the taiwanese navy.

so i just checked as of 2019 there are only 50 hf-2 missiles in service, while an additional 36 upgraded hf-2 is currently under production and will all enter service by 2023. as for hf-3 missiles all hf-3 missiles are ship-based currently and there are no land-based version of the hf-3 missile currently in development.

Ahhh yes you just motivated me to dig up one of my oldest posts on this forum lol:

"Here are the other systems the us is planning to sell to taiwan:

U.S. Pushes Large Arms Sale to Taiwan, Including Jet Missiles That Can Hit China

So basically: US is going to sell a billion-dollar arms package to Taiwan including the following 7 weapons:
1. MQ-9 Reaper reconnaissance variant (confirmed)
2. Land-based Harpoon AShM (confirmed)
3. HIMARS (confirmed)

4. AGM-84H/K SLAM-ER (confirmed)
5. an unspecified type of naval mine (confirmed)
6. M109A6 Paladin (very possible)
7. ??? (don't know) [recently some less-credible Taiwanese media outlets are saying that the 7th weapon is the Abrams tank, however what variant exactly is going to be sold is still unknown]
"

The highlighted 2 are the 2 sales that has already taken place: 36 sets of Harpoons (with more coming in the future) and an undisclosed number of himars systems

Unproven against significant air defenses.
Drones themselves are highly vulnerable.
i.e. it may very well be just as doable, or may not.

J-16 and J-16D be wiping out Taiwan air defense left and right after J-20 takes air superiority. If you don't have air superiority in modern warfare you are in big trouble.

Wing Loong attack drones are nemesis of mobile anti ship launchers. We saw how devastating Turkish attack drones were in Syria, Libya, Azerbaijan.
taiwan is said (by domestic media) to have one of the densest air defenses in the world.
