Interesting how the President of Taiwan was in Los Angeles at the time of this incident. If something went sideways, the Taiwanese President would be safe in the US. Hard to believe they could accidentally fire the missile.

Interesting there is no bad comments/articles or condemning it from any medias ... another proof how bias the medias are.

Imagine if it was China ... misfired missiles? hahahahah ... will be thousands thousands of bad comments/articles all around the world ... act of aggression, incompetent, primitive missiles, lack of training, etc, etc

IMO there's no question that PRC radar is capable of spotting the missile, but "1 second after launch" is impossible. That news is probably made up by the media.

Well, if it was detected by a Chinese AEWC aircraft, then a detection after a few seconds from launch wouldn't be out of the question (or if the HF-III flight profile has a really high initial flight altitude).

So by every and any interpretation out there, it was an "epic fail" scenario on ROC part, and folks on both sides of the Straits were so disappointed that the supposed first shot of the war gone flopped.

Any one know what kind of resolution a land based over the horizon radar could achieve on a sea skimmer (or not at all)?

Simple, zero resolution.
There would be too much noise bouncing off the sea to distinguish a small object right above the waves.

Let's see what the ROC's own investigations come up with and how the authorities and the media handle it. It was an epic fail, and an unacceptable one, that a missile was fired unintentionally in the first place. Even more so that a civilian boat was hit, a civilian killed, and others injured, it was pure luck that something or someone not more important or sensitive or more things or more people were hit, injured, or killed. Heads better roll.

Latest news from the investigation seems to indicate that the coordinates were entered before the naval officer pressed the "launch button". Looks like he might serve (a deserved) life-sentence for this fiasco.

雄三飛彈誤射，現在關鍵竟傳出是因金江艦全體士官兵為迎接甲操檢測官，全體在甲板待命，中士高嘉駿卻因為前晚失眠睡不著，只睡2、3小時起床操演，且在戰情室胡亂輸入座標，明明是中文面板，卻不知道為何把演練模式改成「作戰射擊模式」，恍神釀大錯，但由於操作飛彈經驗已3年，因此檢察官仍不敢置信。

很多人都好奇，事發當時，艦上的人反應是什麼，據《壹週刊》報導，當飛彈轟隆隆射發出去時，射控士官長陳銘修因口渴去喝水，聽到聲音嚇得吐出水，衝回戰情室看，艦長等人也衝到戰情室，不過為時已晚，高嘉駿也整個人嚇傻。

不只艦上，一旁海軍左營基地辦公室的人，一聽到轟隆隆聲音直覺不對，個個表情呆住，趕緊了解情況。

The idiot is claiming that he made a mistake due to "a lack of sleep". Given the complexity of procedures required for launching an anti-ship missile, I doubt that he did it accidentally.

I love how they say China was jolted by this. Yeah I guess you can spin it that way with China's notorious canned responses. Of course the media ignores the obvious. 40 nm away and a supersonic missile took twenty-five minutes to get there. I think I've driven my car that fast once. No need for any fancy anti-missile missile system to knock that one down.

Something really strange about this story. I can see so many scenarios from they fired a missile thinking the fishing boat was a Chinese military vessel in their waters to a missile was never even fired. I love how that because countries are allied with the US, there's this automatic belief that they're more responsible countries. I still love the supposed North Korean torpedo attack on the Cheonan. They found German torpedo parts in the wreckage so of course North Korea had to have laced one of there own torpedoes with German parts to make it look like it was a US/South Korean conspiracy to frame the North. Yeah how did North Korea engineer it that only the German parts were found and no North Korean parts? Of course it works because they have to protect one another. No critical thinking required.
