I am not.
Given that the ROK seems to be moving to a more regional tier as opposed to focusing only on dealing with it’s troublesome northern sibling. The ROKAF will need to reach beyond the peninsula. Currently the ROKAF has about 18 Casa C235 and 12 C130 aircraft thats a rather small force lacking anything larger in the dedicated transport role. They also have about 4 A330MRTT but that’s still limited. With the ROK defense industry pushing for a degree of autonomy in production and potential to make it’s self less an arms importer more an exporter and with the bulk of the current mainstay of tactical lifters still being C130 or An 12 their is a strong potential market in the next decade We already see Embraer and the Russians trying to squeeze in.

Looks good, but I really dont get the rationale behind AAMs on possibly the worst platform to put AAMs in the world.

Active air defense has been talked about a lot these days. With high off bore missile technology now available. That said it’s no fighter and would be most likely used in a counter missile threat. More effective than gun systems of the past. You also now have the realistic potential of Parasite fighters development via drone tech as opposed to the past where being manned placed limits on them.

The image shows at least four Air to air missiles per wing. There has been talk of implementation of such for transport talked about openly by a number of agencies. Not just as Air to air though. Bombs and AtoG options would be options to. Presumably as well as drop tanks.

haven't lasers being the hot topic recently?

I estimate that in max 5 years they could install lasers on big planes to provide air defence capability to the plane.

Unlikely to be effective unless they place multiple modules on a single aircraft. Given how long it is likely required for a laser to neutralise an incoming missile, a salvo can still overwhelm a single laser. At the moment, even ship based modules that would have access to more power and are themselves very bulky, can only effectively take on slow moving and slow flying drones and only well within 50km range. I think three or four missiles would easily slip through a laser defence where it'll be capable of neutralising only two in that range and time.
