Instead of building 400 J-20s, China can build 200 units and use the remaining money to research and develop the J-31.

Depends if the J-31 is useful. Seems like it'll become a naval fighter only and PLAAF has no interest in it. Now if it were a simpler single engined stealth fighter, it could make sense but performance for single engine in the F-135 category is just not even close to being available yet. Would be better to take the money for 200 J-20 units and divert it towards 6th gen and other areas not 5th gen because that's done. Even improving the J-20 would be a better use of funds.

They don't know it until J31 go head to head against J20.

Many inside China said J31 has even superior stealth than j20 and that alone already vastly superior than MIG29 which is a conventional plane. ...

Isn't such a statement a bit premature?? There is not even a fully fledged prototype flying while the two demonstrators were at best aerodynamic testbeds ... as such IMO such a bolt statement is plain ridiculous.

Lol, Due to everybody OUTSIDE China harping on J20 being non optimal stealthwise by having the minicanard, well j31doesnt have that.
Rest similar, head shape similar and both have frontal DSI S inlet, internal Bay , angled stabilizer.

Then I can only say this judgement is plain naive and nothing but a typical fan-boy armchair-analysis.

why do they want to harm their own airforce by a downgrade?

building cost isn't that significant in 5th gen, and Chinese fund separately on building and design instead of a whole program like F-35, so what you and other suggested cutting off part of the program and transfer the money to other programs it's never going to happen there

PLA doesn't care even a little bit about outsider/amateur/fanboy discussing their equipment on the internet, and history has demonstrated so many times that PLA had surprised the internet like literally every time

Seems to me it would be much easier to compare stealth of J-31 to J-20, since they are being produced by the same country in the same generation.

The RAM coatings and other internal stealth technologies are likely the same/similar, meaning the major difference will be aircraft shaping.

I will note that the J31 is starting with an advantage since it is so much physically smaller than the J20.
