CCP building bridges with KMT to counter the DPP. How quaint.
According to news articles from Taiwan, ROC's defense ministry already instructed their veterans' affairs division to "talk them out of it" should and when the surviving veterans receives such invitation from PRC.

So in reality, Beijing and Taipei are jockeying on this whole issues, instead of working together, be it tacitly or otherwise.

They are almost done building a mockup of the Tiananmen gate as we speak...

I wish I knew the coordinates for this location. I bet something will eventually show up on Google maps.
If they've gone to this length then probably a move towards a more permenant parade-preparation facility instead of a tent city as in the past. Now, instead of having Google Map getting updated photo shots, I'd pin my bet on some news agency pay high bucks to Space Imaging for a photo shot over Beijing region in a week or so, catching not just the facility but the vehicles parked in the yard.

Do you think that the new all-terrain ICBM TEL will make an appearance in this parade?
If those new TEL are now in service, they might be.

I think this is really more appropriate here rather than in What the Heck News.

Xi invited Abe to attend the Anti-Fascist celebration in September:

Rough Translation:

Vice Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping revealed during the BRICS/SCO meeting that President Xi Jinping already sent the invitation for the Seventy Year World Victory against Fascism celebration to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. All six of SCO's core members confirmed attendance of the celebratory events in September.

Wonder what Abe's response will be.

yeah.... NO. I would lay money that Abe will say no, The Invite is basically a insult and meant to shame Japan any Representative of the State of Japan would be Jeered and more or less be made to look shamed.
It would be like Hannibal voluntarily marching in a Roman triumph.

100% disagree. Apparently the Xi administration knows the historical language the Abe administration speaks: China is returning to form and it has a seat at its part of the table for Japan if Japan admits its misdeeds in betraying China and more importantly the failure of going in that direction.

China as the long time dominant regional power failed itself as well as all local powers which acquiesced to its position, however grudgingly or superficially as often was the case with Japan, when the colonial powers came and took over by force. Japan was the only country in the region able to transform itself enough to militarily resist colonial conquest, though it mimicked the colonial powers too well and promptly preyed on others in the region.

China is obviously re-establishing its regional sphere of influence in its historical style and as has always been the case it seeks to impress each country in the region sufficiently to do so: in terms of wealth, military power, and systemic sophistication. Japan has always given more weight to military power though the fact that what is considered traditional Japanese culture is mostly modeled after Tang dynasty Chinese culture says a lot.

So Xi's invitation to Abe is to say first that China is back militarily and will stand up for itself in that regard, do you accept that? Secondly are you impressed enough to acquiesce to our leadership once again? I believe the answers are yes and no respectively which is why we see the Abe administration take Japan in the direction they are taking.

With a less hawkish administration than Abe's and if China plays its cards right Japan will probably be playing nicer with China. However given Japan's historical tendencies and the world's geopolitical circumstances China will have to definitively supersede the US on the whole in the region before Japan acquiesces to China's leadership again.

If Xi actually invited Abe to the celebration, this would be an ingenious thing to do. No matter what Abe does, he would be wrong.

If he actually accepts the invitation, that means he agrees with China and the rest of the world in that Japan was a fascist state during the WWII and what they did was wrong. So much so that he is willing the celebrate Japan's own defeat with them. This is something that the Japanese govnts have refused to admit. If he doesn't accept the invitation, it also means he identifies Japan as the enemy of all those who accept the invitation. And it also means that he still thinks his own current govnt as the same as, a continuation of, the administration that held office during the WWII. I don't think anyone in the Jaoanese govnt has openly admitted yet. The world will know what they actually believe.

One thing that I do know is that Germany always openly admits that what they did during the WWII was wrong. They are always happy to celebrate the defeat of the Nazis with everyone in the world.

Indeed, I think that is the crux of China and SK's problem with all the carefully crafted 'apologies' Japanese governments have made in the past - it seems extremely insincere, and hence hollow.

Its the kind of apology you would expect some corporate lawyer would craft after a court order to do so to express regret and condolence but admit no wrongdoing.

The primary reason the Japanese are so determinedly unwilling to make any admission of guilt or a real damned apology is because they themselves still identify with the wartime government.

Can't agree more with the above.

I have to disagree with this, the vast majority of Japanese definitely do not identify with the wartime government. However a segment of Japanese society, including part of the elite such as Abe, do not want a black mark on Japanese history which severely taints their warrior culture. On a practical level possibly a larger segment of the elite if not population also don't want to risk losing the gains Japan made through war whether it is Ryukyu Islands independence, or weaken their position in territorial disputes with China, the Koreas, and Russia.

. In light of this, it has been announced that a national holiday to celebrate the victory will be held on September 3, with the hope of encouraging more people to take part in the commemoration.

Besides the active duty PLA soldiers, the parade will also feature WWII veterans, families of the martyrs, and possibly appearances of militaries and leaders from overseas. All parade troops will assemble at a Beijing training base, and some previously unseen military equipment and armaments will also make their public debut at the parade.

So, with today marking the one-month countdown to the parade, what do you expect to see from China? Please share your perspectives with us in the comment section below, or send us an e-mail at [email protected]

Abe will probably send a low-level diplomat to the event.
