Wonder what Abe's response will be.

Confederate flags spotted outside the US

A backlash against the Confederate flag in the US has gathered pace, with its removal from state properties and off the shelves of retailers. But it is also seen flying in other parts of the world.

To its opponents, the battle flag used by Southern states in the American Civil War is a symbol of slavery but to its supporters it is part of southern heritage.

It is also seen outside the US. In the

, descendants of Confederates that fled to Brazil hold an annual reunion at which the flag plays a central part.

Readers have been getting in touch to say where else they have seen it displayed.

ITALY
I have seen it at Napoli football matches in Italy. I was told by one supporter that they liked the colours and the rebellious symbolism it carried in Italy where the South and North still have a rivalry. It goes beyond football. Gustavo M Lanata, Italy

CYPRUS

When I visited Protaras, Cyprus, in 2004 the main strip along the beach was lined with Confederate flags. One of the oddest things I've come across. No one there seemed to know the flag's history or even what country it was from. Locals and UK tourists both assumed it of Scottish origin given the angles of the "X". The flag was everywhere and no one knew what it meant (the desired reunification of Cyprus or pre-war attempt to merge with Greece don't seem to match the rebellion theme, though I assumed it perhaps started as some protest flag). Pete Bullwinkel, New York

CROATIA

The southern coastal region of Croatia is referred to as Dalmatia and I have seen the Confederate battle flag on buildings there. I was told by a Croatian that the coastal region associates this symbol with being from the southern portion of the country and distinguishes them from the mountainous regions to the north around the capita of Zagreb. Clint Hodges, Split, Croatia

UK

Every year, the town of Millport in North Ayrshire, Scotland, holds a country and western festival and the little island is covered in Confederate flags. Emma Morgan, Belfast

While campaigning in the most recent UK general election, I saw a man proudly displaying the Confederate flag in the front window of his Battersea, London, flat. As an American living in London, I was surprised to see that flag so I asked him what he thought it represented, and he replied that he flies that flag because he's "a rebel", and that's the "rebel" flag. Ben, London

I fly the North Virginia battle flag in my back garden. It is not a racist flag, it is now only a symbol of the South. My forebears fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War and I celebrate that. Britain still flies the Union flag after years of historical slavery abroad and many atrocities. D Fortesque, Market Drayton, UK

LUXEMBOURG

I live in Luxembourg now (moved from the USA) and I was shocked to come across several houses flying the Confederate flag in some villages here. I never had the chance to ask the people who lived at the house what it meant to them, but for me it has instant connotations of racism and hatred. It saddened me to see it here.Ann, Luxembourg

UAE

I have seen the Confederate flag being waved around the UAE while I was growing up in Dubai. There were many cars and trucks, usually owned and operated by rich wealthy Emiratis who would post the Confederate flag all over their cars and on top of their pick-ups. And just drive around waving the flags around town. It never made much sense to me there and interestingly enough it appeared to have a cultural connection to their love of cars, especially brute American muscle power cars. Very strange. Tiago Niles, Sao Paulo

PORTUGAL

The Confederate flag is often flown by some football fans groups related to Benfica and sometimes Sporting Lisbon. It is customised to include the crest of the group in matter or in all green tones (in the case of sporting). It not apparent that the fans know what the flag stands for in the US, a lot of the Benfica fans who carry it are black. They find the design to be nice. Pedro Borja, Lisbon

CANADA

I live in western Canada and there are lots of this type of flag on many vehicles especially pick-up trucks. I see them on windows and front lawns. As an African immigrant, I understand the racist nature of this flag but it seems not everyone understands the fear or the flag's past usage as weapon to subjugate black people.Abdul Haji, Edmonton, Canada

SPAIN

I am Italian and live in Spain, but I have a heritage from Alabama. I wear a Confederate flag on my waistcoat not because of any political or racial meaning, but just because it was my grandmother's mother's land. Jack Fluck, Madrid

Well I am At it I want to CLarify something The Confederate Flag that is causing so much... It's a Fake. The Flag is based on the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia that was commanded by General Robert E. Lee, That said the battle Flag version was a Square not a rectangle, There was a Rectangular version Adopted by the Confederate Navy but it had a brighter Shade of Blue. during the life of the CSA they adopted 3 national flags however although the Design was used as part of two of the Confederate National flags It was never the Whole of the Confederate national Flag. By far I have to say IF your loking for mean Spirit Then the Flag that should have your wrath is the Stainless Banner.

DELAND, Fla. (AP) — A Florida woman says she was shot in the leg while sitting at a café on Independence Day, but she didn't realize it until doctors found the bullet five days later.

Heather Charlebois told The Daytona Beach News-Journal (

) that after days of pain from what she initially thought was a firecracker, she went to the hospital. Doctors told her they found a .38-caliber bullet lodged in her leg.

Charlebois says she was on the patio of Cafe Da Vinci in DeLand on Saturday night when she felt a pain in her leg. She checked it out in the bathroom, but there was little blood.

Police say there were no reports of gunfire but believe the bullet might have been fired into the air from some distance away.

This video explains it well. Also I like his channel, and vsauce's.

yeah.... NO. I would lay money that Abe will say no, The Invite is basically a insult and meant to shame Japan any Representative of the State of Japan would be Jeered and more or less be made to look shamed.
It would be like Hannibal voluntarily marching in a Roman triumph.

100% disagree. Apparently the Xi administration knows the historical language the Abe administration speaks: China is returning to form and it has a seat at its part of the table for Japan if Japan admits its misdeeds in betraying China and more importantly the failure of going in that direction.

China as the long time dominant regional power failed itself as well as all local powers which acquiesced to its position, however grudgingly or superficially as often was the case with Japan, when the colonial powers came and took over by force. Japan was the only country in the region able to transform itself enough to militarily resist colonial conquest, though it mimicked the colonial powers too well and promptly preyed on others in the region.

China is obviously re-establishing its regional sphere of influence in its historical style and as has always been the case it seeks to impress each country in the region sufficiently to do so: in terms of wealth, military power, and systemic sophistication. Japan has always given more weight to military power though the fact that what is considered traditional Japanese culture is mostly modeled after Tang dynasty Chinese culture says a lot.

So Xi's invitation to Abe is to say first that China is back militarily and will stand up for itself in that regard, do you accept that? Secondly are you impressed enough to acquiesce to our leadership once again? I believe the answers are yes and no respectively which is why we see the Abe administration take Japan in the direction they are taking.

With a less hawkish administration than Abe's and if China plays its cards right Japan will probably be playing nicer with China. However given Japan's historical tendencies and the world's geopolitical circumstances China will have to definitively supersede the US on the whole in the region before Japan acquiesces to China's leadership again.

Pan Despite your claim of 100% disagreement you actually seem to 100% agree.
It's just the perspective that gets muddled.
Apparently the Xi administration knows the historical language the Abe administration speaks:
This is the part we Disagree on. Abe is not Speaking in historical and neither is Xi. Abe has been cast as much to demonize him yet his main job is and remains trying to Keep Japan an living breathing nation relevant, Intact and prosperous.
Xi's Job is trying to keep an maintain power Individual, Political, Geopolitical well pushing the Ascendancy of the PRC and the CCP.

For Xi the History end events is only as important as the modern Party Narrative. The Dominance of the Party part of that is to push for recognition of the party.
Back in May Xi invited the ROC to attend the Parade they to said No. Based on a law and Policy of the Taiwanese Government that serving public servants cannot attend such events. that law is based on the same logic that you and I agree with, and the Same reason Abe or any other official officer of the State of Japan would by attending be placed in a position of Shaming.
By Attending for Taiwan It would be a public admission of subservience and Play to the Narrative of the CCP as the True Successors to the whole of China. Taiwan being based on the Republic of China cannot Agree to that.

Japan for differing reason is in a similar position
By attending for Japan, As This is a Parade dated and attached to the Defeat of Japan in the second world war. Even though this is the Modern State of Japan and not the Imperial Japanese Empire. It would be a Act of Subjugation or as you put it to "acquiesce to the PRC's leadership" a position No Sovereign state or Leader could do, Especially if there are Sovereignty issues at stake. especially with the past issues in mind.

So what Xi is doing by issuing these invitations is like What the Kings of Persia did when they asked for offerings of Earth and Water. Demanding tribute and signs of Subjugation. Recognition of there Dominance. Earth and Water being Symbolic offerings of Surrender to the Kings of Persia and handing tangible proof of the lands as Persian.
Attendance to the Parade being symbolic of the Shaming and admitting of the wrongness of resisting the rise of the modern Peoples Republic of China.
IE your argument is the same as my reasons why Abe could not attend are the same.
to do so would be a Shaming, and Any official attendance would be more or less a humiliation for Japan and the individual as well as there office. A act of Surrender and not to a gracious victor but to a Jeering one.
Might as well ask him if he would mind wearing chains and being dragged behind a Chariot as a aide whispers " remember, You are not a God" into Xi's Ear well holding a laurel wreath over his head. as It turns the Parade into a Triumph. The powerful might on display with the vanquished foes forced into humiliation.
