PLAN Carrier Construction

Liaoning's Provincial Party Committee Secretary has just said publicly that "after the commissioning of the Liaoning, China's second home-constructed aircraft carrier will start construction at Dalian, with an estimated construction cycle of 6 years, together with 2 other 052D guided-missile destroyers. "

First, this MAY or MAY NOT be reliable. But I believe it should be as it corresponds to what we have known so far (North and South each will build a carrier, with the North start the construction of 052Ds). Although the number of 052Ds does differ from what we have known (2 vs 4).

Second, in the original report what he said was "国产" which literally translates into "country-made" or "country-produced" or "country-manufactured". So, by "second" he could mean that Liaoning is the first OR he could mean that the carrier at Shanghai has already started construction (which may be those structures we have seen in photos).

These are just some of the possible interpretations of his words and some of my own speculations.
Excellent info, and analysis xiabonan. Very much appreciated as it whets our appetite for what we all believe is coming...that is two carrier being constructed simultaneously in the PRC.

But, as with all things, it is time that will reveal what actually happens.

Well the actual thing sitting in the shipyard clearly isn't a piece of art or a building.

But it obviously isn't a real aircraft carrier module either, it is just a demonstration module.

I think the building in the drawings is based on the demonstration module, rather than the actual demonstration module being a building itself. How are they going to move it for one? Not to mention it is all metal, no glass...
That's an excellent picture of it...had not seen that one before and its the best I have seen.

If that module were built up to specs, and not just a pure demonstrator for looks only...then if accepted, it could possible be used later in the actual carrier.

However, at this point, I would agree that it is a demonstrator and is serving its purpose as such, though we have never done such a thing to my knowledge with a capitol US Navy vessel.

Here is an English language article about China constructing a new aircraft carrier in Dalian. Personally i'm skeptical of such claims. We have seen over the years more article's and claims before about China starting to construct a new domestic aircraft carrier. And the person saying it this time is not someone from either the navy or the defense ministry but a local official in Liaoning province. I always thought that China will start to construct a new carrier after the Liaoning has been fully operational for a few years so that they can get more feedbacks for the construction of the new carrier. For now the Liaoning doesn't even have her air wing yet. So i will treat this story with caution.

China has started constructing the second of four planned aircraft carriers, a top government official said according to media reports on Saturday.

China has started constructing the second of four planned aircraft carriers, a top government official said according to media reports on Saturday.

The ship is under construction in the northeastern port of Dalian and will take six years to build, the reports said quoting Wang Min, Communist Party chief for Dalian's Liaoning province.

The country's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, was completed in September 2012 in a symbolic milestone for the country's increasingly muscular military.

Another two are in the pipeline, according to Wang, in a projection of power that could be seen as contradicting Beijing's long-stated policy of arming itself strictly for self-defence.

When the Liaoning went into service, Beijing and Tokyo were locked in a territorial row over the Japanese-controlled Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea which China also claims and calls the Diaoyus.

The row continues to simmer, along with other sovereignty disputes with the Philippines and Vietnam.

Early this month, a Japanese newspaper said China was overhauling its military structure in order to strengthen its attack capability and secure air and naval superiority in the South China and East China seas.

The Liaoning carrier conducted its maiden mission in the South China Sea in January.

It followed an incident in December in which a US warship was forced to avoid a collision with a Chinese naval vessel, prompting Washington to accuse China of being the aggressor.

We've had this discussion before..Just keep reading from Delft's post onward.

An USN C41 steam Catapult can launch this..an A6-E with twenty four 500(226kg) pound bombs and a full centerline tank... what more do you need?

An Nimitz class with 4 C41 catapults can launch, if need be , four fully laden aircraft every two to four minutes. I see no need for a cat with an ski ramp. EMAL or steam.

Just my opinion.
You're quite right, for a 100k carrier with a crew that is accustomed to this way of working. For PLAN that is now just developing its use of aircraft carriers and which has a much lower budget it makes sense to look at innovation in order to reduce the distance to the effectiveness of USN. A smaller carrier loses a larger amount of deck space to the launch and recovery areas and has less space that is always available so she will need to do even more respotting unless you use a scheme as I propose to shorten the length of the cats. And EM cats bent to the surface of a ski ramp are not more complex than straight EM cats.

Sorry, but this is actually supposed to be a piece of Art

Whether it's art, module piece, or a building it's still ugly to me.

Not any local official. A very high ranked party member, the kind who is directly responsible for major projects and culpable to their results.

This report is not some forum rumour......but is being published in many of the worlds media outlets...........ie China has started construction of its 2nd aircraft carrier at Dalian.......and that the plan is for the Chinese Navy to have a fleet of 4 carriers, including the Liaoning.

It could be rubbish!.........but i think its more than likely that this time it could be true!.....otherwise someone will be facing the chop.....quite literally!

So seven stories and the bilge??? I think it is an awesome piece of craftsmanship, it portends of great things to come, having done a little bit of welding and fabrication, it is great and offers a neat picture of what we can expect.

I am surprised that it took that long for some one higher up to leak it like this.

this is open news 2-3 years ago. ever since they first parceled out the contract for this thing around that time.

its a big project and alot of suppliers are involved. talks like "so one so got a contract on carrier project to supply generators etc" was all over the chinese ship building industry for a couple of years.

the first batch like the rumour mill said, " is more than one" . something like 2 firm +2 options. Shanghai + Dalian.
no one got the full bite.
