Re: Somali pirates and Chinese navy

Glad that China is joining in. With so many countries affected by the increase in piracy around those waters we all need to do our part.

Agreed.

Chinese sailors backed up by international navies fought off Somali pirates trying to hijack their ship on Wednesday, as the UN authorised land operations against the increasingly bold bandits on land.

This is an outstanding act of bravery by these Chinese sailors. This is the sort of action these criminal pirates understand. The use of force.

Outstanding job by those Chinese sailors!:china:

The ideal companion for 167 Shenzhen if she's sent, would be another destroyer that can carry two helicopters. The more helos, the better. That would either be DDG 112 and 113, both have experience on long journeys, but both are also deployed on the north fleet, not in the south. Of the remaining four modern destroyers in the South seas fleet, 168 is the one with the experience for long overseas travel, hence I believe it would 167 and 168 that would go.

I just don't see the point of sending 052B there. I was originally envisioning a jiangwei and a supply ship, but now it looks more likely that they would send 167 and 883. We will see if that second destroyer is actually going to happen.

Indeed, pitting (more or less) unarmed civilian sailors against RPG toting pirates take a lot of courage, they're really heroes.

Whatever ships China sends out the, the most important part is the sharing of intelligence and data with the navies already off the coast of Somalia so we don't have another disaster like what happened with the INS Tabar and the Thai trawler.

We are in agreement then, as I said earlier they might want to send 051B and 052B.

As I have mentioned earlier, dedicating one supply ship to one destroyer only would not be an efficient use of resources. Other reasons I think why they would want to send two are:
  • It will be a great opportunity for the crew to get some real experience. And the crews that need this experience the most are those on board 051B, 051C's, 052B's, and 052C's.
  • You need one ship to stay behind to guard the resupply vessel while another is chasing pirates.
  • Having to defend itself, the resupply ship, and chase pirates at the sametime would make a single ship too vulnerable. With two destroyers, each can look out for another.

If China has more destroyers, I think she would have send four.

They may need to send a ship with more powerful sea search radar capability, and the 052B and 052C maybe more powerful than the 051B in that regard. Between the 052B and the 052C, the 052B maybe the more powerful of the two thanks to the combination of the Fregat radar and the Bandstand radar, whereas the 052C only has the Bandstand/Mineral ME style radar. The Bandstand radar can give OTH capabilities for the search. The 051B lacks both.

That also means the 054A can serve as the option. The Jiangweis won't have the same search capability.

Does it really matter what ships the PLAN sends? The pirates don't have any modern equipment. I'm sure those civillian Chinese sailors will ward off pirate attacks until the PLAN arrives. I am curious on how the logistics will work for the PLAN. Perhaps the UN or other nations have set up an supply line.

Other nations should follow the Chinese and fight off the pirates and not fall victim to these criminals.

Are all the sailors on these Chinese flagged vessels Chinese? I know there are thousands of Filipino merchant marines serving the World over.

AWESOME!! :china:
A Chinese sailor:china: prepares to defend from pirates' attacks on the deck of the Chinese ship "Zhenhua 4" in the Gulf of Aden December 17, 2008 in this photo released by China's official Xinhua News Agency. The Chinese ship escaped pirate hijack in the Gulf of Aden after the crew fought for four hours with the help of a multi-coalition force. Nine pirates armed with rocket launchers and heavy machine guns boarded the ship. The 30 crew members locked themselves in their accommodation area, using fire hydrants and firebombs to prevent the attackers from entering, said an official with China Maritime Search and Rescue Center (CMSRC), Xinhua News Agency reported.

They're weapons may be old and rusty but their intelligence is quite good, they all have GPS, and radio equipment and people on the 'inside' of major ports in the Indian ocean feed them info about what is going where, the reason there are so many attacks is because the pirates generally know when to pick their battles
