I am referring to that rifle

I'm pretty sure he's referring to the Norinco CQ rifle....

Yes I am aware.

I don't have, so I present the 2nd best thing, of SWAT type of CQB training, with hand-hold optics.

You guys have this mind that "I am out for shrimp today, so if I got fish, I just not happy about it", I guess?

How about this? PLA SMALL ARMS thread?

In the above picture, is the purpose of the crossbow simply to kill silently? Wouldn't it's disadvantages like bulkiness and short range outweigh its use in favor of a silenced sniper rifle?

I don't think you can use a silencer effectively on a sniper rifle since the rounds are supersonic. I mean you can use a silencer to reduce the noise of gun fire but it will still be loud enough for enemies to detect it.

Crossbows are especially effective in urban settings. I think the PAP once killed a hostage taker with a single shot. They are deadly weapons if the user puts enough training into it. The PAP officer who shot the hostage taker took lessons from the minority crossbowmen in Yunnan. I don't know how effective they are as field weapons.

I think cross bows would be used for unconventional warfare? A silent, good ranged killer can be useful to shoot down guards or something at night :p

And besides it looks badass.

Apparently the PLA and PAP uses a few commercially available models of crossbow, they've yet designate one across the service. At least in the HK Garrison they use the NL28 series, which they claimed with crossbow bolt the effective range is up to 80m.

And while sniper rifle with suppressors can further lower the noise with the use of sub-sonic munitions, they still can't compare with the almost silent effect the crossbow afford - yes it's bulky but crossbow ain't meant to fire in anger, the shooter picks the time and place to fire.

I think one other point that everyone failed to mention (a bit esoteric) is that China invented the crossbow and it remained a very popular weapon from the Warring States period till the Mongol Yuan Dynasty when handgonnes started replacing them. Perhaps it is just old nostalgia?

Chinese use of modern crossbow was more of a "learn from the West" process, not so much of the nostalgia...see, by late Ming Dynasty the Chinese began to step away from crossbow, and progress on warfare technology of all sort almost ground to a halt - or worse, regressed - during most of the Qing Dynasty. And in the last 2 centuries, progress and refinements made on crossbow technology were all done in the West.
