I looked up the Soviet VAU-6 small reactor, and it is apparently 5MW.

Plus from a psychological perspective, the slides don't really have much effect on the US. But within Asia, it just reinforces how much China is aiming to be far ahead of anyone else within the region.

It's having a psychological effect in the US, albeit one mired in the rationalization of denial...

For most of us who've watched the Chinese Navy for 5 years or more, the slides should really be a reinforcement of understandings that have already been made. Like, of course it would be reasonable for the Chinese Navy to pursue new generation nuclear submarines, destroyers, missiles and carrierborne aircraft, as well as offset technologies of their own...

I think foreign commentators and watchers of the Chinese military and the Chinese Navy in particular, do not have as accurate of a grasp of the ambition that they actually have, than most of us here do.

That is plenty of power, average home use 1000 kw hr or less. So 5 MW is electricity for 5000 homes. Any comment out there?
Well I answer it myself it depend on the efficiency 1 MW = 650 Homes if the efficiency is 0.6 So it is not 5000 but more like 3000 homes

It's not clear if that is the total power or just electricity. But I guess there would be enough for the electrical systems plus 3+ knots plus some spare to charge a battery.

It is likely 5 MWt ... but the Chines one might have bigger output (i.e 10 MWt)

even 5 MWt would produce roughly 1.5 - 2 MWe .. which should be enough ... I doubt existing sterling engine would produce that much.

China may want 3- 4 MWe design and I am sure they would be able to crack it with the same footprint and weight

for reference ... look how small eVinci is

As was remarked a few days ago this looks like a way to manage expectations, not only this article by Richard Fisher but also the publication of the Power Point pictures from Rear Admiral Zhao's presentation. China shows that not only is it catching up on techniques where US have an advantage but also that is has advantages in new technical areas and that while spending half as much on defence as US. This is possible of course because US is spending mostly on maintaining hegemony over many countries - which lead to that unending war in Afghanistan - and on closely containing countries where that is not the case. That containment has now lead to the stand off with North Korea. US can escape that threat by granting independence to South Korea so that the Koreans can negotiate reunification but that would blow a hole in the containment of China. I suppose the pictures were published to prepare President Trump for discussions on this subject.
Fishers remarks on The Philippines, Taiwan and South Korea do look otherworldly.
