Talking about designer babies, my department ran a workshop on this a couple years back. I was the only non-white in the room and everyone was worried that if gene editing was to be widely available all people of colour would want their children to be white and there would be a loss of diversity. I was too dumbfounded to even comment.

What the hell? Sounds like the most cringe concern trolling I’ve ever heard lmao.

Editing race will be the hardest anyway so it should be the least of anyone’s concerns. The subtle facial differences between racial groups are controlled by thousands of genes.

So if gene editing ever becomes widespread and some Black couple wants White children all they’ll be getting is a Black child with blue eyes, blonde hair, and light skin. Basically an albino.

It takes a village to raise a child, it doesn’t always just boil down to genes and even genes can change due to environmental factors, look at epigenetics.

If it were solely down to genes, why do third generation Chinese Americans not perform as well compared to their Chinese counterparts, in academia and other metrics? Notwithstanding the anglosphere’s “all of society” race war against Asians.
That is what I also believe, the environment will have bigger impact in making a person a useful contributor to society. Not the extra iq filter on furtilized eggs.

So embryo selection is still legal? Are you sure? If so then that’s amazing.

I do agree gene editing is very premature so hopefully that’s all this law is about.

I'm just going by the wording that prohibits “the implantation of genetically-edited or cloned human embryos into human or animal bodies, or the implantation of genetically edited or cloned animal embryos into human bodies,”

Eventually, I see Huawei builds and evolves some version of Chinese "Bell Labs." They have the scale, the culture and organization, and are in the right industries. But first, they need to emerge from the sanctions over the next couple of years to become stronger.

The sanctions are really not that much or not that important.

The biggest proof is all the layoffs that Huawei made. Never happened.

It's just business now. The US goes its way, Huawei will go their way.

We just see who in the world follows who.

I know, but there is still this dark cloud hanging over Huawei. Semiconductor chips are still unresolved problem, even though people are relatively optimistic about the prospect. They're still using chips from their inventory (5G base stations & smartphone). Only when Huawei solves the semiconductor problem completely, you can say they're in complete control of their destiny.

That is how it is, that is how a business is run.

Every day there is a dark cloud.

But that is not correct.

Every day is a new day! With endless possibilities.

Maybe a German business is like that, every day a new dark cloud. Those Eastern Europeans tend to be like that.

A Chinese business, it is loud, it is bustling, it is vulgar, and it is happy. The dark cloud is just for someone else.

Huawei has its strengths. It has a lots of strength.

That is why this US government fight with Huawei is so interesting. This is strength against strength.

The Huawei base station IIRC needs two 7nm chips, which SMIC should be in a position to supply, if not now, then very soon.

At this point, we got to wonder how this fight will evolve or change, as we know this fight will not stop. Good.
