Probably not formally banned but will "convince" them to not use behind the screen.

Japan just stabbed America in the back.

Japan was going to be a big part of building equipment for 5G to make America and its allies number #1 in 5G, but Japan had other ideas and sided with China, effectively taking itself out from the American side to the Chinese side.

This was brutal, unprovoked, and ruthless. But, usually most back stabbings are like that. Oh well, what can you do, other than have eyes in the back of your head.

Japan will not ban Huawei. Ergo, they are on China's side. No one in Asia has banned Huawei from 5G.

What do the United States think of that, and what will they do next, is up to them.

Japan has a lot to lose by sticking with the US without taking its own interests into account. Now that the Prime Minister changed the policy changed as well.

Hi gelgoog,

Cause China is just next door, to hedge means two way, Security alliance with the US, economic relationship with China. Japan had the bargain tool to pursue its national interest. It's not the 80's anymore and they learned their lesson hard to what the American had done to them. Deep inside they appreciate China as a counterbalance to the US and use it for their benefit, these is the way the Asian define national interest, so unlike the Australian and other anglo- saxon countries.

I thought India had? If India did, China would also ban all software from India, including everything IT from India

What I read before about India, is that they have 4G and still use 3G and some areas are still at 2G, so them going to 5G is not a realistic proposition. They will lag in 5G deployment, possibly by several years behind Europe and America.

The significance of Japan reversing itself with the new leader, and declaring that they will not ban Huawei to the Americans, it is not about you or me, ie not about Japan, America, or China.

The significance is about Germany.

If Japan refuses to ban Huawei because of security reasons, because they are bogus, why would Germany ban Huawei for the same bogus security reasons?

To make a long story short.

Not that we will ever read that inconvenient question in the Liberal media the next few months.

:p

As far as I know, Japan never totally banned Huawei. They did announce a ban on government contracts, in which they are favoring local manufacturers anyway. They have been vague on a total ban.

In fact, Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and to some extent ZTE are still very competitive in the Japan smartphone market to this day.

Are they actually installing Huawei's equipment?

They never bought a lot and I don't think they ever will beyond some Softbank purchases. Saying they won't ban doesn't mean they will buy. But its still a great moral victory for China and Huawei. Since Huawei has to build base stations and 5G equipment from inventory, there is going to be limited amount and China would certainly want first dibs at those goods before they are exported. Its most likely Huawei's inventory will get prioritized for local consumption, and so I would say the damage is already done because Huawei may not be able to supply export markets as they have to satisfy internal Chinese demand first.

But being in the good side here, the Japanese can be able to negotiate licensing agreements with Huawei and ZTE which can be used to build their own equipment.
