While his recommendations are actually quite generic not very useful, most notably, former Google CEO admits China is just too big and too smart for America to compete against. As I said before, the US is exhibiting unprecedented insecurities regarding its own capabilities and fear of defeat when facing China, and also as I said before, they will use the excuse that China has just too many people to justify to Americans why the US cannot maintain its lead.

The U.S. needs an urgent national strategy on developing artificial intelligence technology to counter the rising competition from China, said former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, chair of the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence.

"We want America to be inventing this stuff," Schmidt said. "Or at least the West."

Schmidt said Thursday that the U.S. should invest more in research, ethics and AI infrastructure and partner with countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Israel and Japan.

"China is simply too big," he said. "There are too many smart people for us to do this on our own."

The US still leads in AI basic research, foundational technologies including software and semiconductor chips. But China has the scale, the speed and the willingness to experiment. It has also built the lead in related application infrastructure in physical and regulatory, which include 5G, EV charging stations, smart cities, industrial IoT, robotics. For example, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is basically an AI company, built on scale (users & data) and fast trial-and-errors.

Here is another webinar on China's AI development, from someone with on-the-ground experience in China.

Why do people here assume USA has a monopole on litography equipment? Surely, it does suply ASML with a very important component, through Cimer. But ASML is a Dutch compoany, which is part the EU. USA may threaten ASML, but it's not like China can't work a solution out with ASML and try to come up with another illumination source, that can be adapted to actual EUV machine. China will increas supply EU with commodities and other products through the Silk Road. There's a problem with EU overlapping NATO, in great part, but EU will have to chose its own interests and not be a satellite of USA forever.

There's also the part where he says AI should reflect human values. All of the sudden Western values are human values. Why is that when Apple first put facial recognition on their iPhones, basically anyone who isn't white, anyone of the same race could unlock their iPhone. Their technology all centers around and is made for white people in their programming. It's no different when it comes to the health care system like where we're seeing with COVID-19 treatment favors whites in the US. Same with vaccines. And I bet their first instincts is that technology is not bias so the results are natural and not prejudicial.

Every leader with huge lead remains a leader till they cease to be one.

Don't count on it. The reason only ASML is stating they'll sell DUV machines is because both SMEE (soon) and Nikon and Canon can sell DUV machines also. If those companies gain money selling those machines widely they'll then be able to fund the development of EUV to compete against ASML. I'll also repeat this again: China needs to block the sale of ARM to NVIDIA.

I am talking about collaborating with ASML and not expecting anyone else to do it, because they might really not be able to so soon. And also meaning cutting USA out of most business.

Hi MTd2,

Not until China is capable of and had something to offer that ASML wanted, this is how the EUVL came to existence. Its a corroboration effort between ASML, CARL ZEISS, DARPA (funded) and some US company , each had its own niche expertise to offer. China problem is that she had to do it all and rely on its own company.
