No. I've noticed that R&D statistics tend to be a few years out of date.

But consider how this year, R&D spending in China will likely accelerate because of the technology war and also because the Chinese economy is still looking at 1% annual growth.

And the USA and Europe will likely see far worse economic growth rates.
At this point, a 10% decline in US GDP looks realistic. And that assumes there isn't yet another lockdown in the coming months.
That will weigh far more on their R&D spending.

Chinese technology company SIMCom Wireless Solutions today introduced the SIM8202G-M2, an ultra-small 5G module that can be widely used in virtual reality and augmented reality, helping to create applications such as connected cars, industrial IoT, smart healthcare, and 4K/8K ultra-high-definition video.

The SIM8202G-M2 is a multi-band, small form factor 5G module that redesigns and integrates multiple devices.

It supports NSA/SA networking, covering the network bands of major operators worldwide.
It adopts a standard M2 interface, which is compatible with multiple communication protocols and has powerful expansion capability and rich interfaces, including PCIe, USB3.1, and GPIO.
SIM8202G-M2 adopts a new four-antenna design, which effectively enhances the communication capacity.
SIM8202G-M2 has an ultra-small package size of 30 * 42mm.
In order to ensure that the module can work steadily for a long time, SIM8202G-M2 takes into account the layout planning of the heat-generating devices to ensure that there are enough ground holes to the main ground level for the main heat-generating devices.

Earlier this month, China's first ultra-small 5G communication module, the AI-NR11, rolls off the assembly line at Changhong's Subsidiary Sichuan AI-Link, marking the 5G module's entry into the commercial phase.



The 5G module will be widely used in smart industry, smart energy, industrial robotics, healthcare, video security, drones, and other fields. The AI-NR11 5G module is designed to meet the stringent size requirements of ultra-small cameras and precision measuring instruments.

The academic degree committee under the State Council, China's cabinet, has voted through a proposal to establish an integrated circuit (IC) university program, which will be designated a first-level discipline, in a move which industry observers said represents the country's latest effort to nurture homegrown talent in the semiconductor industry amid a US-led crackdown on China's tech rise.

The degree's establishment will be officially announced after it is approved by the State Council.

The microelectronics and solid electronics university program, which involves semiconductor courses, is currently designated a second-class discipline.

Analysts said the establishment and first-class designation of the IC program will allow more universities to open colleges to train IC students, so as to make up for a drain in China's talent pool. Also, IC-related subjects will have access to more resources and funding.

In recent years, China has been fast-tracking the development of the domestic chip industry amid the US' efforts to cut chip supplies to Chinese tech giants like Huawei and ZTE. And local talent in the field will be critical in aiding China's efforts to break through the US-led blockade.

Roughly 30,000 students in China graduate from IC-related programs every year, according to an industry paper. But the talent gap in China is now estimated to be 300,000, and is projected to rise as demand for chips expands, according to Xu Wei, secretary-general of the Shanghai IC Industry Association.

Fudan University is one of many Chinese universities that have started preparing to offer IC programs. It is working toward introducing an IC Science and Engineering degree, focusing on core engineering issues in IC design, manufacturing, packing and testing.

(Reuters) - China's Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) said on Friday it would establish a joint venture company to develop wafer production units in Beijing to bump up its semiconductor output and reduce costs.
SMIC, China's biggest chipmaker, in a stock exchange filing said it would partner with Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area Management Committee (BDAC) to develop facilities to produce 12-inch wafer, a slice of semiconductor used for the fabrication of integrated circuits.
The first phase of the project will have an estimated investment of $7.6 billion, with SMIC contributing about 51% of an initial registered capital of $5 billion.

The agreement comes as SMIC looks to build out foundries for the manufacture of computer chips that can compete with those operated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd, the industry's market leader.
The deal comes against a backdrop of tense Sino-U.S. relations as American restrictions on China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd threaten Huawei's suppliers, which includes SMIC.

How reliable is SMIC? Their founders are Taiwanese, and might be loyal to Taiwan and the US. Unless they are pro-unification KMT?

It might started by Taiwanese but the present management and shareholder is anything but Taiwanese They are owned by series of SOE or government sponsor venture capital.
Physically their fab are all located in PRC They might have sales office overseas but the bulk of R&D is done in PRC

Who are the owners of TSMC itself? Foreigners might even force the sale of TSMC?

There's talk SMIC is just a bunch of Taiwanese screwing around and taking mainland money. If true, they should probably be executed for treason.

According to previous reports, the Apple A14 processor and the Kirin 1020 processor will be the first flagship chips to use the 5nm process. TSMC is expected to make mass deliveries of the Kirin 1020 in August.
Huawei's Kirin 1020 is expected to be based on the ARM Cortex-A78 architecture. Thanks to the 5nm process, the Kirin 1020 can accommodate 171.3 million transistors per square millimeter, a 50 percent performance increase over the Kirin 990.
