This is extremely recent news, dated 11/28/2024. I think this platform has actually been around longer than that but it is not a competitor for Novaseq because Novaseq is massive throughput while this little one emphasizes fast turn-around time sequencing just a few samples. It is not powerful enough as of yet, though I very much hope that this can develop into something that is competitive with Illumina. As of now, to the best of my knowledge, Chinese sequencing power is almost completely built on Illumina's systems. When Dr.He debuted his tech in 2017, this Chinese sequencer was not there, and his efforts were at the forefront of Chinese sequencing... before they arrested him and kneecaped themselves. So now it's the end of 2024 and we're hoping to get something good going.

What do you mean "no?" MGI was founded in 2016, basically at the same time Dr. He debuted his sequencer and they did not have all this shit in 2016. It's nice that they got a lot farther than Dr. He, but what I'm hearing is that major Chinese genetics companies use Illumina and don't want to switch. They systems that MGI offers, I'm assuming have some issues which can be overcome or refined through. And once again, Chinese sequencing, and sequencing all over the world, is dependent on Illumina, specifically Novaseq. I have never used these Chinese sytems during my training in the US of course; I am only familiar with Illumina and Roche. I'm happy to see what you've shown me; they are actually farther than I had thought. But the point remains the same and it's that Chinese sequencing technology can use all the help it can get; arresting prominant scientists who can contribute is counter-productive.

Whether he was arrested or not wouldn't make much difference to uptake of Chinese sequencers. Even if he had invented the greatest sequencer since sliced bread, no one would give him the time of day because as you point out...

MGI is spin-off of BGI, which uses its own tech for its own services and sells it. So it indeed has adoption.

BGI does not currently use any non-domestic sequencing platforms.


In fact, Illumina, the US's biggest sequencing tech provider, was found even by a US court that it was stealing BGI intellectual property.

So the smart way would have been to put him on the best projects for sequencing that we can muster and then use legal avenues to make these sequencers the option for all Chinese labs as they become ready. It is absolutely not to just arrest him cus whatever Chinese people need to learn the hard way.

12月1日，记者从四川大学华西第二医院获悉，该院妇产科主任郑莹日前远程操控精锋国产单臂单孔腔镜手术机器人，借助精锋云远程手术系统，为身处拉萨的妇科患者顺利实施了单臂单孔机器人下全子宫全切术+双侧输卵管切除术，标志着全球首例单臂单孔机器人远程手术完成。

据悉，单孔机器人技术对设备性能和操作者要求极高。面对3000米高海拔、近2000公里远程传输的技术挑战，在成都远程主刀的郑莹操控位于西藏自治区妇产儿童医院的精锋单臂单孔手术机器人，通过患者脐部一个仅2.5厘米的小切口，用时90分钟完成了整个手术操作，手术双向网络延迟仅40多毫秒。

记者了解到，此次手术中使用的精锋单臂单孔腔镜手术机器人，是我国自主研发的高端医疗设备，也是目前国内唯一获批上市的单臂单孔手术机器人，在性能参数上达到国际领先水平。
