Linux is still buggy. I am on Deepin OS and today when I opened my computer it said "Updates required, please download." So I downloaded and installed updates, however when it got to the last update the "Updating..." bar was stuck there for ages. When I tried to restart my computer, it said "APK file is installing, please do not shut down or restart." So I was afraid of doing anything, but when researching the issue I found another person had the same problem and just cold booted. I cold booted and it came back up fine with the update (!)

So yeah, if they want to make Linux the basis of an alternative they really need to improve the stability of the platform.
The problem with Linux distributions is that it misses a huge company of the level of Microsoft, Apple or huawei making a distribution. Not sure if people can still claim Android is a Linux distribution.

The Linux kernel is mostly sponsored for the server/backend tasks not the user office productivity task like macos or windows.

I use Ubuntu in my workflow for a month now, without any problem.

I can work faster .

The 2005 level is fine for all requirements, everything is now on the web, so who care about the operating system ?

If the HarmonyOS documentation is anything to go by they will use linux as the kernel for their laptop and desktop products and HarmonyOS as shell somewhere in 2021~2022. And soon they will ship a laptop with Kirin chipset running the linux Deepin distribution.

HarmonyOS

Kernel Abstraction layer

| Linux(desktop) | liteOS(wearables) | harmonyOS(mobile) |

My understanding is that HarmonyOS is microkernel, so it's not Linux based or Android. It's closer to Fuschia. Ironically, Google test platformed Fuschia on Huawei phones.

Quantum SIM card, more secure call, rolled out by China Telecom.

With the product, users can choose between normal phone calls or quantum-secured calls with other users that have such SIM cards. Those calls cannot be listened to by anyone else. The related encryption key is chosen from options that are updated in real time. After the call, the key is deleted.

Now sure if this tech can age well considering it could be used by evil people like terrorists.

Central authority in possession of the root certificates could listen the calls.

It makes very hard/impossible for example the NSA to wiretap the calls, or interpret the recorded calls.

Other side, the "terrorist " is just a partisan financed by the enemy.

Definition depends on the side interpret it.

I sometime use a Linux desktop distro on my private , but with like 2~3% of the desktop market share you're not going to convince me its popular. But now that windows has WSL and windows power toys(fancy zones) has been reintroduced, I don't see a need to tinker around with Linux distros configuring god knows how many config files just to get things working, but that is just me.

A operating system usually has two basic components a kernel and a shell, what most people call a OS is the shell they are familiar with.
The information about kernel abstraction layer comes from the HarmonyOS app development documentation:

Might be that in the far future Huawei will only use LiteOS and HarmonyOS for their products, but for now the plan seems to be that they will use the Linux kernel for desktop environment. As a software developer by trade, I'm mostly interested in the Framework layer because on top of that layer i can write user applications.

Some high over sources for people that are interested:

Honestly Huawei should try to be the Android of China instead of Apple by licensing Harmony OS to BBK and Xiaomi. China doesn’t need another smartphone manufacturer but it does need its own mobile OS to compete with iOS and Android. Huawei already got enough things on its plate with the new OS and chip fabrication.

Huawei already lets its partners such as Midea and Joyoung use HarmonyOS on their products, which is unlike Apple, and also says other smartphone makers could use HarmonyOS as well. I think the matter will be up to other Chinese smartphone makers because they might view Huawei as a competitor. Huawei's competitors might want to take the Google ban on Huawei as a chance for their growth, having Google services support as their selling point against Huawei.

Do you know what's the progress on the transition to a fully micro kernel based OS for Harmony OS?

Its my understanding that they are still following the Google OpenSource Android architecture.
