The gap could be narrowed to 3 years, if SMIC's N+2 debuts in 2021 as planned and is equivalent to TSMC's 7nm, which first came in late 2018.
Hi Skywatcher,

Great to hear from you again, can SMIC able to produce it using current equipment. I read that it had a high failure rate? and also within 5 years do you thinks SMIC will be 1 generation behind TSMC?

By 2025, SMIC will probably be on pilot/LRIP of 3nm (assuming that CIOMP/SMEE has delivered a high numeric aperture EUV tool prototype in that timeframe), and TSMC established on 2nm.

Hi Skywatcher,

Good day,

So almost .5 gen behind (IF, according to plan), Now I know the reason why Samsung is nervous and is planning a huge investment to remain within reach of TSMC , they are worried that SMIC might overtake them due to State, the private investment support and the momentum of China Hi -Tech development.

A newbee question what's the difference between 3nm and 2nm, I know that the smaller the better in terms of power and density, why did TSMC go that route?

Kunpeng 920 7nm Huawei Desktop review :).

@ansy1968 TSMC produces programmable chips for Xilinx for use in U.S. F-35 fighter jets. This is why US wants TSMC to build a plant in the US in case Taiwan gets taken.
HI localizer

Good day

thanks for the good info, So TSMC was force to build a FAB in the US to service its need, in that way I think there is a QUID PRO QUO for TSMC to service Huawei?

Regarding Kunpeng 920 7nm Huawei Desktop, since it is based on ARM architechture, what software can it use? sorry for being a nuisance.

Regarding the new Fab, we have to see if Trump gets reelected. I'm sure TSMC also doesn't want to build a Fab in the US for fear of espionage by Intel. If Trump loses, there is good chance TSMC will once again be able to service Huawei. Lobbyists are working constantly. The trade war is lost.

Kunpeng 920 is ARM so it uses Linux, which in this case is

Is TSMC involved in research related to quantum semiconductors? Both the US and China are dong related research.
