Sany eyes bigger slice of global heavy equipment market

At a Sany facility in the city of Changsha city in central China’s Hunan Province, where an array of excavators, cranes, and concrete machinery is displayed, Liang Linhe, vice president of Sany Heavy Industry, told CGTN that “the forecasted revenue growth in 2018 is 50 percent, and by the end of this year, Sany will overtake Caterpillar in excavator sales for the first time.”

You may have never heard of Sany, one of China’s most important homegrown success stories, but the name is as big as Caterpillar in China, where it has rocketed from a company making welding materials in 1989 to becoming the biggest construction equipment manufacturer.

Sany’s rise benefited from the hundreds of billions of dollars the government poured into the enormous infrastructure projects in 2008. But as the construction boom slows, it started to hunt for sales elsewhere and has moved beyond the country’s borders to cultivate markets in the US, Europe, Latin America, and India.

Its overseas sales increased by 25.1 percent year-on-year in 2017 to 11.62 billion yuan.

Helping fuel the growth of the overseas market, Liang said, is China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

“The Belt and Road Initiative is becoming a very important driver for Sany’s international development,” said Liang, “Sany has done a better job than its competitors in India, where the sales is predicted to reach three billion yuan this year. ”

As Sany strove to gain a foothold overseas, it has made a series of brash moves, and it has both grown and stumbled, especially in the US, Caterpillar’s home turf.

Its biggest hurdle starting off was finding experienced US dealers to sell and service the equipment, while the most seasoned ones have long been allied with Caterpillar and Japan’s Komatsu.

Sany also struggled with the view that Chinese products are of bad quality. It lacked the core skill or technology to make many of its components, which it buys from companies like Cummins and Bosch Rexroth.

But today Sany is narrowing the quality gap and winning customers in developed countries and among quality-conscious equipment buyers, including top mining companies.

As Sany has grown fast and generated economies of scale, it has ultimately allowed the company to invest vastly in R&D.

It spends five percent of its sales revenue on R&D, the highest in the industry, according to the company’s statement.

As of June this year, the company has applied for a total of 12,070 patents and authorized 8,751 items. The cumulative number of patent applications and authorizations has ranked first in the industry.

China on Sunday put into operation a prototype exascale computing machine, the next-generation supercomputer, according to the developers.

The Sunway exascale computer prototype was developed by the National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering and Technology (NRCPC), the National Supercomputing Center in Jinan, east China's Shandong Province, and the Pilot National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology (Qingdao).

The NRCPC led the team that developed Sunway TaihuLight, crowned the world's fastest computer two years in a row at both the 2016 and 2017 International Supercomputing Conferences held in Frankfurt, Germany.

"The Sunway exascale computer prototype is very much like a concept car that can run on road,"said Yang Meihong, director of the National Supercomputing Center in Jinan.

"We expect to build the exascale computer in the second half of 2020 or the first half of 2021," said Yang.

Another prototype exascale supercomputer Tianhe-3 passed the acceptance tests on July 22. Its final version is expected to come out in 2020.

The two prototypes marked a further step towards China's successful development of the next-generation supercomputer.

Supercomputers are changing people's life in fields such as weather forecast, calculation of ocean currents, financial data analysis, high-end equipment manufacturing, and car collision simulation, said Pan Jingshan, deputy director of the National Supercomputing Center in Jinan.

Pan said the new-generation supercomputers will provide strong support to scientific research in more fields.

An exascale computer is able to execute a quintillion calculations per second. In China, prototypes are being developed by three teams led by the NRCPC, Dawning Information Industry C. (Sogon), and National University of Defense Technology (NUDT).

The United States and Japan are also speeding up the development of the exascale supercomputer, expecting to unveil it in as early as 2021.

Yangtze Memory Technologies Co. (YMTC) on Monday unveiled key details regarding its Xtacking architecture that will be used for its upcoming 3D NAND flash memory chips. The company's technology involves building NAND chips using two wafers: one wafer containing actual flash memory cells, which are based on a charge trap architecture, and another wafer featuring CMOS logic.

Traditionally, makers of NAND flash memory produce memory array as well as NAND logic (address decoding, page buffers, etc.) on one wafer using a single process technology. By contrast, YMTC intends to make their NAND array and NAND logic on two different wafers using different process technologies, and then bond the two wafers together, connecting the memory arrays to the logic by metal vias using one additional process step.

UPDATE: YMTC clarified that its Xtacking architecture is capable of 3 Gbps I/O speed, but does not disclose specs of any actual product.

The Xtacking architecture is designed to allow YMTC to get ultra-fast I/O while maximizing the density of their memory arrays. The manufacturer says that its Xtacking-based chips can eventually scale I/O speed of 3 Gbps, which is over two times faster when compared to Samsung’s latest V-NAND chips and about three times faster than mainstream 3D NAND. In addition, by locating the controlling logic beneath the NAND memory array, YMTC says that the Xtacking architecture allows them to maximize ttheir 3D NAND capacity and minimize dimensions of its chips.

On paper, the high I/O performance would allow SSD vendors to make low-capacity SSDs with limited NAND channels without today's performance penalty, offsetting the low parallelism with high transfer rates.

YMTC says that usage of two 300-mm wafers instead of one does not increase production costs significantly, as maximizing their memory density allows them to offset the cost of an additional logic wafer. Behind the scenes, the company uses XMC's fabs to produce both memory and logic. YMTC says that it uses a 180-nm process technology developed by XMC to produce the periphery logic. Meanwhile, like other makers, YMTC does not disclose lithography node it uses for 3D NAND, but typically these manufacturing technologies are pretty ‘rough’ (~ 50 nm) by today’s standards. Because both wafers are processed using mature fabrication technologies, YMTC does not need a very high mix-and-match overlay precision to bond them together and form interconnect vias.

Makers of memory in general tend to keep their die sizes low in a bid to be more competitive and profitable. When it comes to the usual Gb-per-mm2 metrics in case of planar NAND, a smaller die wins in terms of costs because the costs of the wafer are spread out over more chips (of course, putting all complexities and yield rates aside). It gets trickier with 3D NAND as wafers spend more time in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) machines, hence the number of wafers processed by a fab as well as the costs of wafers themselves are no longer crucially important metrics. Nonetheless, they are important enough for companies like YMTC to maximize its NAND density by placing the controlling logic under the memory array.

Well Capex(capital expenditure inc real estate) is notoriously cyclical and so does the industry that support it like this guy SANY. Nothing unusual. Anyway interesting Man against the dessert It will take China generations to return the dessert into productive land. but somebody has to start it. By panting tree but easier said than done because of the surface wind speed. It blown the sapling right away. The survival rate is only 10%

The technique is to reduce surface wind speed by forming a square pattern grid made of straw. And planting the tree inside the square. Improving the survival rate to 90%

Now instead of natural straw they create a starch based woven fabric increasing the efficiency of wind blocking checker

What happened to the sales (down) from 2011 to 2016 and then up again?
I'd guess it is related to the global financial crisis from the end of 2008. The crisis has a delayed impact to the economy. Sanyi's product is for infrastructure buildings. China introduced stimulus in 2009 kept the domestic infrastructure building afloat, actually increased (the HSR expansion is one of the stimulus). This delay made the decline some years later than the start of the crisis.

The up again maybe due to the global recovery out of the crisis and more importantly due to the OBOR initiative began around 2016. Count the infrastructure projects in Africa and Asia, you will see why.
