According to a South Korean biannual government report, China recently surpassed Korea across an index of "national core technologies."

I don't like their index. You can't say South Korea is 3.2 years behind the US because there's stuff that the US had in the 1970s that South Korea still can't do. There's stuff that China had in the 1970s that South Korea still can't do either.

Basic research spend was up 9.3%. And most of that gain was real, thanks to China's low inflation rate. Of course, China still has a lot to do to catch up to the collective West.
