The Chinese research vessel Exploration 2 carrying the deep-sea manned submersible "Deep Sea Warrior" returned home Wednesday after completing a trial mission of a deep-sea in-situ laboratory in the South China Sea.

The laboratory is equipped with a number of high-end sensing and detection equipment, including a deep-sea MEMS gas chromatograph, a deep-sea spectrometer and a deep-sea mass spectrometer.

The sea test aimed to verify the underwater performance and long-term operation reliability of the system.

"Equipped with different sensing devices, the in-situ laboratory is able to carry out scientific research on different targets in different ocean areas, such as cold springs, hydrothermal zones or abyssal zones," said Zhao Bin, an associate researcher at the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

During the expedition, a number of important fluid, sediment and biological samples were obtained in the "Haima" cold spring area and two active cold spring areas to its northeast.

Meanwhile, the in-situ laboratory carried out a 72-hour observation of the fluid composition and microbial community at one hole of cold spring fluid leakage.

"We found that the three cold spring areas had different fluid activity scales, leakage rates and biological community characteristics. The fluid activity in the 'Haima' cold spring area was also significantly lower than before. We will conduct comparative studies on the videos and samples obtained from these three cold spring areas in different development stages to understand their development so as to have a systematic understanding of the basic development law and characteristics of cold springs and hydration in the South China Sea," said Du Mengran, a researcher with the Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering, CAS.

I would have to suspect this is all bull just to manipulate support for this bill. The US already has the advantage. She heard? How about showing the proof that China has been lobbying it. If anyone were to be scared is Taiwan and South Korean since they would ultimately lose their business.
Well, she did say "China" for all we know she was referring to the Republic of China a.k.a. province of Taiwan and not the P.R.C.

Katherine is just being semantic and besides none of the political chattering class would discern the difference anyway. Just saying.

A team of researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, working with a colleague from the University of Copenhagen, has found evidence that water was present on Mars more recently than has been thought. In their paper published in the journal Science Advances, the group describes their analysis of data from China's Zhurong rover and what it showed them about ice in hydrated minerals.

One of China's next generation supercomputers can do 1.2 exaFLOPS at single-precision, or 4.4 exaFLOPS in mixed precision. On this computer, A Chinese research won the 2021 Gordon Bell prize for beating Google's quantum supermacy declared in 2019.

The team used the sampling of quantum states of a random quantum circuit as an example problem for the closing of this hotly debated quantum advantage. The researchers’ random quantum circuit simulator, combined with the firepower of the Sunway exascale system, simulated a 10×10(qubits)×(1+40+1)(depth) circuit at a sustained performance of a staggering 1.2 exaflops of single-precision computing power, or 4.4 exaflops of mixed-precision, which the researchers say is “A new milestone for classical simulation of quantum circuits.” They reduced the simulation sampling time to 304 seconds from that previous estimate of 10,000 years.

list. According to the web site, the current No. 1 on the list is Fugaku in Japan by Fujitsu. It has a peak performance of 1 exaFLOPS at single-precision or even "further reduced precision". The Frontier built by the US is expected to break the exaFLOPS barrier for real (i.e. in the highest double-precison).

The new HPE/Cray/AMD build Frontier system, currently being installed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is widely expected to beat the Exa-scale barrier in full 64-bit floating point precision. However, it was not able to submit such a result before the deadline for this edition of the TOP500. Over the last year there were also reports about several Chinese systems reaching Exaflop level performance, however none of these systems submitted an HPL result to the TOP500.

The operation speed of high-speed railway connecting Beijing with Guangzhou, South China's Guangdong Province, will be gearing up to 350 kilometers an hour (km/h) in June, the China Railway announced on Friday. It will become the fifth high-speed rail in China that operates at such a speed.

Starting from June 20, the section linking Beijing with Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei Province will operate at 350 km/h. The section has passed trial test on May 13, marking an important achievement in building safety standard demonstration line of Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed rail.

The test used Fuxing bullet train and high-speed integrated testing vehicle, with a comprehensive check on up-down track, bridge, telecommunication, signal and overhead line system. During the test, the train's speed once hit 385.1 km/h.

After the speed-up, the minimum transportation time from Beijing to Wuhan, a journey of around 1,330 kilometers, will be reduced to 3 hours and 48 minutes.

The current maximum operation speed of the Beijing-Guangzhou rail is 310 km/h. Among which, the Wuhan-Guangzhou section, opened in 2009, originally operated at 350 km/h and the speed has then been decreased to 300 km/h since 2011. The Beijing-Wuhan section, opened in 2012, operates between 300 and 310 km/h.

Construction of the Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed rail, with a total length of 2,300 kilometers, was completed in December 2012. The rail has transported 1.6 billion passengers to date.

Currently, there are only four high-speed rails in China operating at 350 km/h, mostly in short-distance travel. They're Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail, Beijing-Tianjin intercity rail, Chengdu-Chongqing high-speed rail, and certain parts of Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed rail. The Beijing-Guangzhou rail is also the longest in terms of travel distance.

Except maglev, 350 km/h is the fastest speed in the world in land transportation, and China's high-speed rail is also the world's fastest.

More high-quality standard trains and Fuxing bullet trains will operate between Beijing and Wuhan starting from June 20. Ticket will be sold based on market price, starting from 410 yuan ($60.4).

Ye Yangsheng, the chief engineer at China Railway, was quoted as saying in a statement China Railway sent to the Global Times on Friday that it is a complicated and systematic project to promote the normalization of high-speed rail operating at 350 km/h, factoring into technical condition, market demand, operating cost and environment renovation.

The section connecting Wuhan with Guangzhou has operated for a relatively long time, "with more tunnels, more impact from external environment, and more track defects," China Railway said, noting that it will conduct comprehensive improvement on the section to pave way for speeding up.

Among China's high-speed rails with a designed speed of 350 km/h, there are still over 20 lines that are yet to reach the designed speed, news website jiemian.com reported.
