Not sure what you are on about. Spreading false rumours. I just used my wechat pay to top up my chinese mobile account with 50rmb, just to fact check this. Went through like any other time. You always had to get real name verification done, like once a year on wechat since years ago. Kinda annoying for us overseas folks since it means taking a photo of yourself holding your passport and uploading that as proof lol.
Your western passport or Chinese passport?

This is like fucking Orwell, I swear I'm telling the truth. A friend of mine runs a business that exports from China and generates profit for chinese business. They can no longer pay their supplier and if not for a family connection with a Chinese relative, they would have to shut down the business. The govt says the goal is to Crack down on gambling but killing small business isn't the way to do it.

If I am a Chinese citizen then I would be using a ID card lol... Of course Western. They are telling fibs. The only thing difficult about China is taking cash out. There never was any problem bringing money in and spending it, i.e. paying people.

Orwellian?

There was a period recently where my US based payment services (eg. Paypal) were asking for scans of my passport due to some US govt requirements anti-terrorism, money laundering, yadayada ... reasons.

Again with the it's okay for the west to do it in the name of "freedom" double standards.

I'm with @Godzilla on this, I too am not sure what you are on about ...

Well if your friend actually do business related to OEM or imports goods from China, he would have known by now that he can find a shipping company/agent to pay (T/T payment, WesternUnion, or just credit card ) for the payment FOB or DDP, there are so many ways to pay a supplier in China that WeChat is definitely not a good method for professional business conduct, it is meant for daily small transaction related with paying bell, shopping for grocery and perhaps buying a cup of milk tea, and it is essentially just a Tencent app that will act as a gateway to your debit card in a Chinese bank, which like any digital payment system in the world, requires real-world ID cards for identification, last time I check they do that in US and Canada too as per my experience, not sure how it is Orwellian

In the past I had to upload passport and ID info for apple ecosystem development.
Not sure if I still need to do that these days.

Not sure I would even want to transfer big chunks of money anonymous how do you secure and insure such a transaction?

When you make up stories up to slander China, don't make ones that other people can prove wrong just by opening their Wechat and using the function. Do it like you did before. "My dad and his (hanjian) friends were talking trash about Xi and suddenly their Wechats all got deleted and Chinese agents came in and beat everybody up! China's a draconian/orwellian/police state, man!" Nobody believed you but at least we couldn't prove you were lying.

Yup I signed up for the Vultr hosting service (kinda like aws but they are not as big) and they asked for a photo of my US passport, drivers' license AND the front and back of my credit card on file.... plus they also wanted a picture of me holding my ID up right next to my face... when I didn't comply within the 24 hour period they closed my account and terminated all my VMs....

Or take airbnb for example, they also wanted me to provide them front and backs of my government ID, including US passport needed if traveling to China etc....

I was getting a lot of pre-approved loan offers (unsecured type) and decided to accept one of those offers to help give me some extra spending money for my end of year upcoming vacation.... and in the signup process they asked for my banking creds in order to "see my spending habits"... I only found out after the fact that once they got my credentials they also started taking payments directly out of my savings account even without my permission, consent or control and it was all there in the tiny print in the pages and pages of legal wording that no one ever reads when they scroll past to sign...
