censored an article by one of its own staff researchers published on Friday that discussed the country’s widening gap in the digital economy with the US and stressed the importance of the tech sector amid Beijing’s ongoing crackdown on related industries.

The article, titled “Warning of the widening gap in the digital economy between China and the US”, said that domestic Big Tech companies, which saw rapid growth from 2016 to 2018, are now slowing down and falling behind those in the US in terms of both revenue and market capitalisation.

China’s tech industry is at a low point, the article said, and the country must “tightly grasp the historical opportunity of information development and digital revolution” to avoid repeating the mistake of missing out on previous industrial revolutions.

@gadgetcool5 hahaha at which metric is it being measured profit or innovation? we are leaders in 5G, its application, AI and even in Quantum computing. If it is behind as the researcher stated then Tencent is in trouble for not seizing that opportunity. Gov't had already placed the framework and the physical infrastructure needed. I will have a favorable view if it is a Huawei or even a BYD reports and take it seriously but coming from Tencent , Alibaba, Baidu and others tech monopolies, I will take it with a HUGE GRAIN OF SALT.

In United States people still use cheque. Most likely an article made by Tencent to cry at Chinese government for tightened regulations and anti monopoly probes, where tencent is guilty. Censored to make it look it isn't tencent fault.

He's talking about a discovery made with China's (and currently the world's until the one in the next video is built) largest radio telescope.

China is a partner in what will be the world's largest radio telescope array that will be built in both Australia and South Africa. This is an international project. The telescopes themselves --- you can refer to them as elements but each element is the size of a full size radio telescope --- are built in China.

very good. being funded to build cutting edge scientific instrumentation use by the public is one of the ways in which EU stays relevant technologically despite their relative weakness in industry and software.

This is very misleading because China is making it’s companies FIT for the competition ahead, their valuations are taking a hit but in the end their business models will be far sounder and more sustainable and thus will have the higher valuations.

If US companies contInue to rely on exploiting personal data and Chinese ones are forced to find new business models there is only going to be one winner because eventually US privacy regulations will catch up with Chinas (and Europes) but by then their internet companies will be behind.

If the article is as described, not sure it's particularly useful. Market capitalization isn't a good metric for much, digitalization in China is fairly deep as well. Revenue would be significant but that would require looking at why: is it deeper cloud integration with Google & Microsoft, monopolistic rents, FX rates or something else?

China censors anti-American rhetoric in China. Is it surprising? They do it because they know it can easier turn and bite them. If they use it to stir emotions in the Chinese population and then don't do enough to satisfy those emotions they stirred, they will be blamed. In this case taunting the technology gap could spark more anti-China actions by the US government. The US doesn't realize many of their taunts are what sparked China's Sputnik moment in technology. Why don't they know it? Because the Chinese don't say it. China proclaimed "Made in China 2025" and the US used it to spark anti-China legislation regarding technology.

Beijing's problem with propaganda is the audience they're speaking to is the US. They're hoping to persuade the US. The US on the other hand their propaganda is aimed at the world as the audience. They want to get the world to be anti-China hoping to intimidate Beijing into submission that way. Secretary of State Blinken invited the UN to investigate the US on human rights abuses. Why? To counter what China told him during the meeting in Alaska that the US has serious civil issues and are not in the position to point the finger. Was this exactly China's intention? I bet it wasn't and it was just to counter the US. Once the UN gives the US a clean bill of health, the US will use that to say there are no problems in the US so China can't point the finger at them anymore. The Republicans protested allowing an outsider to judge the US. To the Democrats they will spin it as the world clearing them of any wrong and they'll used it against China. When you see even the West's world opinion polls they conduct, the media will only report the Western side of the poll which is always anti-China. Nearly everywhere else, there's a more positive view of China. Even the US can't ignore that. What the West is not talking about is why is the non-Western world buying China's COVID-19 vaccines when the West uniformly has declared it doesn't work? If it doesn't work, they shouldn't be wasting resources getting it. I guarantee you this that the West is alarmingly disturbed that the world is not listening to them on this. It says the world is making their own conclusions based on science and not the propaganda from the West. China should be talking to the world not the US. For the dumb Chinese who think it's possible to sway the US to their side, Americans will never like you. If you dare to think for yourself, they will never trust you for them to like you. Getting world opinion against the US is when they'll think twice.

The West doesn't have every resource to maintain their economies. The US thinks it's independent and doesn't need anyone but that also means they have no influence because they ain't buying from everyone else. They can claim they're energy independent but that also means they have no power or influence on energy producing countries who sell to others that do need them. The US cannot tell them not to sell to certain countries when they're not filling their pockets with money. They have to compete with China for other resources. Other Western countries need those resources too and they complain how China beats them in getting it. That means countries that provide these resources make more money from China than they do from them. It's hard for the US to tell them not to sell to China. China shouldn't be helping the US in propping up their credibility by valuing their respect and acceptance. If China values the West's respect and acceptance, they're telling the world the West's opinion is more valuable than China's.

If the US really wants to clear their name, they would drop the sanctions against ICC Prosecutors investigating US war crimes.

But great post btw; in a counterpoint i'd say that english language Chinese media isn't directed at the anglosphere per se, but the Chinese diaspora who have been brought up in english speaking societies or European nations which use english as a lingua franca.
