I think those pics were taken during a joint exercise with other countries, probably Russia and other SCO states, because you can see Chinese flags painted on the vehicles which would not be necessary if it was an exercise amongst the Chinese units themselves.

This tells us that the new type 99 variant has been in service for sometime and that the PLA is comfortable with their use and not concerned about showing them to other exercise participants.

Yeah, the 99A has been known for being in service since 2010 with the 38th GA 112th Div, 334th Regt. and it is very unprecedented that China is showing off this elite army to the SCO excercise. It was discussed in the Chinese media beforehand, that this decision was a sign that Sino-Russian relations are at an all-time's high and that the annual Peace Mission excercises deserve an elevation in status.

I have not seen this type with PLA service.

Actually looking back now I think it is the same or very close variant of this tank exported to Tanzania, should have realized that only the paint scheme have changed.

The armor cladding reminds me of the terra-cotta soldiers' body armor.

Actually makes sense The Terra-Cotta soldiers were assembled form modular peices precision made to assemble. The Armor and construction of Modern MBT's is modular by design. The "Tank Engines" Are actually power packs, Assemblies of Engines combined with Transmissions designed to be pulled form the tank in a few hours. it's a standard feature found in just about every tank and armored vehicle built post M4 Sherman.
