New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

617 GWh would be enough for 10 million passenger EVs. So it would be enough for BYD's planned 4 million passenger EVs and an unknown number of electric commercial vehicles such as electric buses. After these, BYD probably can still supply some other EV makers.

BYD also has existing battery businesses (phones, standalone batteries) which would account for some of that capacity.

And given the existing battery shortages, I suspect its better for BYD to hold onto those batteries for use in a few month's time

Baidu's Apollo go robotaxi has landed in Wuhan

Keep in mind that BYD picked to use Baidu's autonomous driving technology.

So it was interesting when BYD tweeted a picture of its car in radish shape just as Baidu Apollo started its Radish run.

BYD is up to 37% market share in China in April for NEV and over 10% overall.

BYD's JV with Benz where it has 90% control will launch D9 on Monday.

It'll be fine once people realize you pronounce "Hongqi" like "Hongchi" and not like a racial slur for a white person.

That reminds me of a hilarious criticism I saw of the name of the "BYD Han" as if it's named after the racial majority of China. "Imagine if we released a car called the Ford Caucasian!"

Ford Caucasian is really stretching it too far.

White/Caucasian is the name of one of the major races that also include Asian/Mongoloid, African/Negroid, Australoid.
Ford British/American would be closer but then again Han can also mean other things like for example the name of one of the Dynasty of China.

As the world looks to lower emissions, energy efficiency/conservation becomes ever more important. As a result of that, we need cheaper and more efficiency battery storage. It makes complete sense for the leading battery makers for EVs to also be leaders for commercial energy storage.

This week, BYD is presenting its Battery-Box product using LFP Blade technology for the commercial & industrial market

There is obviously quite a bit of competition. Tesla has the well know powerwall product.

I'm sure there are other ones, but I've only personally looked at Tesla powerwall, which is a very cool appealing product for home owner. I think LG and Panasonic both have options for the market also. This seems to be a market BYD can do very well. As I showed a few pages ago, there will be more battery capacity for BYD coming online than their NEV requirements. So, it makes sense to sell them to other automakers as well as commercial space.

I think once CATL gets it's sodium ion batteries commercialized, that should be the most cost efficient battery source in the market.

The thing about BYD is that it doesn't boast about stuff that are not in production. For example, it actually has the most number of patents for solid state battery in China

But since it's not ready to commercialize it, it doesn't talk about it.

This is a nice video discussing NIO's plans for the future.

Despite a low producing month, ET7 was the 10th best selling premium sedan in its first month. As they regain production levels, I'm sure this will keep going up

NIO has a lot of ambitions also. They plan to enter 25 oversea markets. They have the NeoPark, which is 12 times the size of Tesla's Fremont factory.

This will have production capacity of 1 million a year along with 100 GWh in battery. This doesn't sound like that much compared to BYD's ambitions, but NIO is at a higher pricing segment.
They are also going to create a mass market brand and start production in 2024 at Neopark Phase II

We will see how this turns out. Maybe they are worried that BYD will just corner the entire market. But it's good to see NIO finally taking over production side of things and handling their own ramping up. It's hard to rely on third party to ram up production for you.

Also, it looks like BYD Seal is going on sale on May 20th. I think this will be the most anticipated model in Chinese market this year. There is a lot of excitement on social media. Apparently, a lot of people are placing orders before the price even gets announced. The drag coefficient on BYD seal is better than any Tesla or NIO models. 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 s. Apparently, this will improve to 3.4 s next year.

Only thing I hope is that now that they're starting on the same starting line, chinese EV makers can build up their own motor/battery/ECU/self-driving tech instead of relying on imports. Battery tech in particular is off to a very good start

It's disappointing that even large ICE companies like SAIC and Dongfeng were still using mostly foreign engines even in 2022

Keep in mind that BYD already makes vast majority of things in house. That's why it was able to keep producing when everyone else struggled in April. I've seen a most recent social media post that states they are looking to ramp up to 140k in May, 170k in June and 200k in July. I don't think it's possible to double in 4 months, but they are definitely doing some serious ramp up there.

BYD Han is spotted in Germany. XPeng is also there. It won't be long before China really joins the EV market in Europe. Not just in Norway.

On a very related note. VW is getting killed this year. Down 37% in April. Even ignoring the China declines due to Shanghai lockdown, that's still 25 to 30% down in Europe and North America.

This EV revolution is lifting Tesla and Chinese automakers and dooming legacy auto. Just think about the old ICE factories that have to be written down and all the Capex they have to invest in EV production. BYD doesn't have that problem right now. It's 2x, 4x production and still making money.

BYD electric is apparently going to produce not just battery but back cover for the new iPhone according to social media rumors.
