Another potential breakthrough by GAC: an EV battery with 1000km/625 mile range. GAC also debuted a fast-charging 3D graphene battery that can be charged to 80% full capacity in 8 minutes in June.
Chinese auto maker GAC says its technology allows EVs to exceed 1,000 km range

Chinese automobile maker GAC Group said today it has achieved an energy density of 275 watt-hours per kilogram of square hard-shell cells using a new silicon anode material technology, enabling electric vehicles equipped with such batteries to have a range of more than 1,000 kilometers.

At its Technology Day event held on July 28, the company said it had mastered the technology for the next generation of power battery cells.

This includes unique core technologies in battery materials, cell design, production process, manufacturing equipment, quality control and other fields, and will be the first time in the world to apply new silicon anode materials to large power battery cell products, said Mei Untong, head of the Battery Research and Development Department at the New Energy Technology Center of the GAC Group Research Institute.

This not only allows the electric vehicle to exceed 1,000 km range, but also provides lower cost and better safety.

In addition to the range, GAC Group has also achieved a new breakthrough in battery charging speed.

GAC Group has been researching the large-scale preparation of graphene since 2014, and already has independent intellectual property rights for the 3DG graphene preparation technology.

The company is also using the graphene material in a variety of applications, including fast-charging lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, lithium-sulfur batteries and lightweight body materials.

The company claims that its 3DG preparation method is simple, stable and efficient, and the resulting 3D multi-stage pore structure graphene can effectively overcome cost defects, with production and preparation costs up to 1/10 of those of conventional preparation methods.

Based on graphene's excellent electrical conductivity and special 3D structure, GAC Group has developed a super fast-charging battery that can be charged to 80% in 8 minutes. It can be recharged in 10 minutes and has a range of 200-300 km.

Currently, GAC Group has already conducted preliminary validation of the graphene technology at multiple levels, from the cell, module, to the entire vehicle.

The GAC Group says that a new era of electric vehicles will begin after the completion of mass production testing on board.

Thanks. Can you list chinese EVs with their market cap currenly operational in china ?
Here is the market share in 2019 (Worldwide passenger EV only?):

BYD, BAIC, SAIC, and Geely are Chinese manufacturers. BAIC just debuted an EV with a prototype solid-state battery yesterday, about 5 years ahead of everyone else. Geely owns Volvo. Tesla is the largest EV maker now. It overtook BYD late last year in terms of total EVs manufactured I think. However, Tesla only makes passenger EVs, while BYD also makes a lot of electric buses. In fact, China dominates the world's electric bus sector both in terms of market share (>95%) and manufacturing.

Here you can see China's EV market on a monthly basis:

I think 3 new Chinese EV startups, NIO, Xpeng Motors, and Li Auto Inc, are selling their stocks on the NYSE. I think Li Auto Inc just had its IPO today and its shares jumped 50% after IPO. A cautionary tale though: even Tesla hasn't turned a profitable year yet.

Here is a review of Xpeng's P7, which was just launched in China. An optional battery gives it a range of 706 kg/439 mile, one of the longest among passenger EVs.

Correction for the above: the stocks of the Chinese auto makers are probably listed in NASDAQ, not the NYSE.

Some Chinese auto makers would rather cater to less affluent customers instead of competing with Tesla head-on:

More correction: Nio is listed in NYSE, while Li Auto Inc. had IPO in Nasdaq yesterday. Xpeng is rumored to have an IPO in August in the U.S.

SVOLT, the company that developed a less expensive cobalt-free EV battery with a 880 km/550 mile range and 1.2 million km/750,000 mile/15 year lifespan, secured a large contract with France's PSA Group.
In order to satisfy overseas customers, SVOLT will spend 2 billion euros to build a 24GWh large-scale power battery factory, supporting cathode material factory and battery technology center in Europe. It is understood that the project will be implemented in two phases. The first phase of the project will be launched in 2020 and completed and put into operation in 2022; the second phase of the project will be put into operation in 2025.

In recent years, China’s lithium battery industry chain has accounted for more than 70% of the global market share. A large number of supply chain supporting companies with international capabilities have been formed around Chinese leading battery companies. Chinese power battery companies will also play an important role in the international market.

Tesla's Musk says 'China rocks' while the US is full of 'complacency'-cnTechPost

Tesla CEO Elon Musk lauded the "smart" and "hard-working people" of China while lamenting the "entitled" and "complacent" character of people in the United States in a podcast published on Friday.

Musk was responding to a question asked by Automotive News publisher Jason Stein, who conducted

.

Stein asked Musk, “How about China as an EV strategy leader in the world?”
Musk replied:
China rocks in my opinion. The energy in China is great. People there – there’s like a lot of smart, hard-working people.
And they’re really -- they’re not entitled, they’re not complacent, whereas I see in the United States increasingly much more complacency and entitlement especially in places like the Bay Area, and L.A. and New York.
At the end of last year, Tesla reached agreements with a number of Chinese banks on a secured term loan facility of up to 9 billion yuan ($1.29 billion).

In February this year, Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory was temporarily closed due to the new coronavirus pneumonia epidemic.

On February 8, Xu Wei, spokesman for the Shanghai municipal government said that the Tesla Shanghai factory located in the Lingang New Area of the Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone will resume production on February 10.

The Lingang New Area Management Committee also stated that, in light of the characteristics of Tesla and other key production enterprises and the actual difficulties encountered in the resumption of work, they will fully coordinate to help the enterprises put into production as soon as possible and be able to produce normally.

In April, Li Qiang, secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, held a video conversation with Musk.

Li Qiang gave his congratulation to Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory on its good results in the first quarter of production and sales in the face of the outbreak.
He said he hopes Tesla will continue to plow deep into Shanghai, improve the business layout, and accelerate the construction of the second phase of the Shanghai Gigafactory.

He also mentioned that Shanghai will make every effort to create an international first-class business environment, provide more accurate and high-quality services, help enterprises solve the current development difficulties, and support enterprises to achieve greater development in Shanghai.
Despite all these, Musk pointed out that Telsa has not received differential treatment as domestic companies. “They have been supportive. But it would be weird if they were more supportive of a non-Chinese company. They’re not,” he said.

@supercat

I am not able to find more info on the BAIC EV powered by solid-state lithium batteries. Please be on the alert for more of such news.
Yes, I'm keeping an eye on it. Solid-state battery is supposed to be one of the products that will define the future of EV. The technology is not supposed to mature until mid 2020s.

The joke is that someday Tesla will be sold to China and becomes a Chinese company!
