The problem with methanol and ethanol fuel cells is that their end products contain both water and carbon dioxide. CO2 is the air pollutant that causes global warming that we want to reduce at all costs. Another problem is the low efficiency of platinum catalyst when it's used in methanol and ethanol fuel cells, especially in ethanol fuel cells.

The main issue with the non hydrogen fuel cells is the efficiency.

With hydrogen it is easy to reach 60% efficiency, but with anything else it will be less than the carnot cycle.

That is the reason why everyone try to push hydrogen.

For the safety issues, the battery charging incidents could be as good as anything.

Fukushima is interesting because insignificant amount of hydrogen could destroy complete buildings .

And not a bit, but doing very respectable damage.

I have noticed a total absence of Tesla's in the past few weeks. The temperature in Calgary last week was a high of -30C and low of -35C. I wonder what's the range on those teslas at those temperatures... If they can even start in the first place if left out during the day.

Standard lithium battery can't be charged under 0 Celsius.

I think there are few expensive one that can be charged up to -30 Celsius extremely slowly.

But at -30 even the discharge could be problematic.

Oh, and charging under 0 could mean permanent damage , and can lead to explosion .

So... Tesla owner, living in Minneapolis here. What you say is technically accurate, if, BIG IF, Tesla had used regular Lithium batteries and run of the mill charging technologies.
But, they didn't. They heat the battery up. (They also cool if down in the summer). It's also not the same kind of Lithium and has a number of other technologies built around it. I also have little problem with discharge. The one problem I do have is that in extreme cold (below 0F) I lose about half the range. But that's also why you buy the highest range model and why I ordered the truck with the 500mile range.

But, in case you think I am lying. Ask the Norwegians. The Tesla Model 3 was the best selling car in Norway in 2019.

0f is only -17C... That's a warm day in Calgary during a cold snap. Try -40c/f or lower with windchill.

The problem isn't leaving a garage in the morning, but after parking for a day outside in the cold.

This month India is also getting quite a few ev cars , with the kona being the favourite till now.
Someone I know closely is setting up ev charging points in anticipation of the demand. But the 3 different charging standards is posing a issue.

There is no other way to keep the car in running condition than to warm up the battery pack.

The Mars Rovers example contained Pu-238 heaters to keep the lithium batteries warm.

However even the internal combustion engine needs warming as well, in extreme cold the can freeze .

But it effect only the charging.
Problem with the electric car is the efficiency / range reduce in cold.

Sure. Left it at MSP airport last year for a week (unplugged) during the coldest stretch of the year (-10F +). I lost 30% of the charge during that time. But that was far less than I expected. I have no qualms driving that car all winter long and keeping it outside.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation last week announced it has placed the largest order for electric buses in the country, and 134 of the 155 vehicles will come from BYD, the report said.

Four BYD buses have been delivered to the city, and the rest of the fleet is expected to be delivered over the next several years starting in March, the report said.

To ensure clean operation of the electric buses, LADOT has also built a new three-acre maintenance yard, the EV charging infrastructure of which can hold up to 70 buses at a time, and it also features solar panel canopies over the yard, the report said.
BYD North America President Stella Li emphasized the order was significant for the company, saying “this is the real thing, not a small order or a demo anymore.”

The Shenzhen-based automobile company began pilot operations in Los Angeles four years ago, and its clients include LADOT, Los Angeles International Airport and the University of California Los Angeles, the report said.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti praised BYD for building the fleet with an “all-American” workforce.

“BYD has its American headquarters here in Los Angeles,” he said, “and we’re happy we are doing this together.”

The record-breaking order will help advance the core goals of “LA’s Green New Deal: Leading By Example” — which includes measures to make LADOT’s bus fleet entirely emissions-free in time for the opening ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
